Heris The Land of the Heritors

Many dusty scrolls in the Winter Place library attempt to summarise the world and all its contents. Most are wrong.

How can anyone but despair over the ignorance of sisters who have attempted such works, doing nothing more than listen to what other sisters have to say? They believe it all, copy it all down to be preserved forevermore in the dust and gloom. So what makes this work an improvement on these? It is the truth, that is the difference.

Sadly truth lies the intense scribblings of sisters who have written on their beloved topics and studied them to the extremes of fanaticism. Think of: “Variations upon retractive mandibles amongst foraging micro-creatures” by Sister Arthran being notable for its length, all eighteen sections of it, and the unusual quality of its drawings. “Wrigglers teeth” is the true subject hidden behind the fancy title.

There are many such works, and this writer has studied them all! Furthermore, this writer has travelled widely and spoken to real people: from merchants selling rags in the south to farmers running their bean plantations in the midlands, from insane priests in the north to soldiers and sailors, nobles and slaves.

First, there was time to read. Now there is time to write. The interminable audiences and petitions of everyday duties leave plenty of moments for something more rewarding.

So here it is. This work is no fanatical study of the minutiae. It is drawn with a broad brush. It fills a need, a stepping stone between learned texts of detail and the ignorance of the ordinary person. It provides what is useful to understand the world. As time permits, section by section, copies will be lodged with Sister Suleran, who serves as head librarian now. The hope is that she will recommend them as an introduction for new students so that they can easily learn everything there is to know about everything.
