Harpy Species in Hellverse | World Anvil

Harpy

Harpies are an avian species of Minor Demon in Hell, often found near mountain ranges. Full Harpies look similar to completely anthropomorphic birds, coming in a variety of sizes and colors. They are typically egg layers and hostile towards other species. They are often a favorite pet of Greater Demon nobles.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Full Harpies appear to be almost entirely birdlike, but those of mixed heritage have more varied features, appearing more humanoid. Some have a set of arms and wings, while others just have wings. Some have hair and some have a crest of feathers instead. Some have talons and some have feet.

Genetics and Reproduction

Harpies tend to mate for life, regardless of race, producing typically one child each breeding season (which does vary based on race). They lay eggs and tend to it until it hatches.

Growth Rate & Stages

Harpy children hatch appearing the age of a four or five year old, and learn quickly to catch up to its physical age thanks to the instinct to mimic behavior it sees from its parent (whoever it bonded to when it first hatched.) They age slowly after that, reaching physical maturity around 50 or 60 before their aging stops like other demons.

Ecology and Habitats

Most Harpies like to next and prefer small chambers with only one exit. They often hoard their favorite things, like bones of colorful strings, in their nests.

Dietary Needs and Habits

While Harpies are technically omnivores, most prefer meat and will hunt from above if given the chance. Young harpies will practice their hunting skills on bugs and small rodents before moving to larger prey.

Biological Cycle

A Harpy will molt their feathers once a year during the month of Passio. It is also during Passio that the mature Harpies seek out a partner to breed with, becoming melancholy if they do not.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their strengths and weaknesses tend to vary between race and creed. A dove like Harpy bay have duller senses but a hawk like Harpy would have keen eyes to help them hunt.
Conservation Status
There are few remaining pure hapries in modern Hell due to their capture and "domestication".
