Joe Antwaul
Joe is a somewhat awkward Basti who works primarily in the mines, where she has a wonderful time digging up ore and precious gems which are processed and sent to various buyers and museums.
Unlike most Bast in the town, though, Joe has heritage in wilder places; she lived for a time in the Ivloup Nation, and has little patience for the more 'academic' part of town's preoccupation with 'scientific progress'. When pressed, Joe reveals that she has a warning feeling that some of the doctors and magi responsible for advancement are not doing so out of their own kindness, but rather, that they have ulterior motives.
When the Gul Haze settles over Teraske, Joe succumbs to it along with all the other Basti in the town. Luckily, thanks to her location (deep in the mines) she is unable to cause any lasting damage to the town or townsfolk.
Joe's older cousin, Billee, is the Hellbor Butcher, and Joe is entirely unaware of this. Upon discovery when Billee's slaughterhouse is uncovered, Joe has a series of intense breakdowns that her close friend and relative is the one responsible for much of Hellbor Heights' problems.
Joe supplies an early hint at the horror of the setting. On occasion, she reports hearing strange whistling and wailing from cracks in the wall of Hellbor mine, and as time progresses, she learns how to speak Inferus due to the presences there. It's from Joe that characters can learn of the Angelia, who are "whispering from above" and are "waiting to take what they lost". It is also from Joe that characters can learn that the Daemons are not actually harmful entities, but it's entirely possible to miss this detail as well if Joe isn't taken seriously as a character.
Joe's ever-present mining pick is made of Sealed Gold, and she is entirely unaware of this. If told the material and its make, Joe is suitably distressed and disgusted, getting rid of the pick entirely.
