Kaboudaios

While the city of Kaboudaios has undoubtedly seen better days in its long history, it still manages to maintain its position as the shining sapphire of Paloumaia. Flanking the western bank of the mighty Lazurion River, Kaboudaios has watched empires rise to the greatest heights, only to be swept away by the ceaseless waters of time. And yet the city remains.
Eight Years ago, the city streets became a battleground as various rebel groups attempted to fight off the Makadelian forces, only for their infighting to be their downfall. While the war scarred the city, buildings were rebuilt, roads were repaved, and time marched forward to the point that citizens no longer lived with the tragedies of the past weighing down on them. That being said, tensions are still high, and this former capital may again be embroiled in conflict as northern settlers seek to make this land theirs while the native Azatis refuse to let go of who they are.

Demographics

Genera

The city of Kaboudaios has a similar population makeup to the region of Paloumaia as a whole, including that of the region's Genera. As with all of Makadelos, Humans comprise the largest proportion of the city's population, at about 35%, followed by the five Daemon Genera at around 20%. Of the Daemons, Oreads comprise the largest portion at around 8%, followed by Hydriads, Dryads, Lampads, and Auras. Astauroi sit at around 13% of the population, followed by Centaurs at 12% and Satyrs at 10%, which follows the region's trends but is notable compared to their population outside of Paloumaia. The final 10% includes Harpies, Lamiae, Kobaloi, Cyclopes, and other sapient beings.

Ethnicity

The overwhelming majority of the city's population, at around 70% of its makeup, is Makadelenized natives known as Paloumaios. This number includes several smaller ethnic groups that are similarly Makadelenized, such as the Boroutak Dryads. Around 20% of the city are native Azatis, people who are resistant to or yet untouched by the monarchy's programs of Makadelenization, while the final 10% is made up of Promachoi, or non-native settlers in the region.

Class

Around 8% of the city's population is considered to be part of the "upper class." This class is primarily made up of Promachoi settlers from Panochlos and Antimara, and are primarily industrialists, landowners, and ex-nobility. In rare cases, local Paloumaios have established successful businesses and enterprises, landing them, along with the settlers, at the top of society. About 32% of the population fits within the "middle class," typically being homeowners and petite bourgeoisie themselves. This class is primarily made up of educated Paloumaios who have adapted to the changes made to the city along with Promachoi, who aren't quite upper class but have still managed to establish a successful life for themselves. In rare cases, Azati intellectuals are in this class, taking advantage of the current system in order to fund ethnopolitical movements and develop their theory. Approximately 50% of the population is considered "working class," managing to find themselves employed and not destitute, though with very little to their names. They tend to work as factory and dock workers and do manual labor in a wide variety of agricultural and manufacturing jobs. Primarily made up of Paloumaios and Azatis, with the occasional unfortunate Promachos unable to make a name for themselves. The remaining 10% of the city is made up of the underclass, the poorest of Kaboudaios. This class is primarily made up of Azatis and some Paloumaios, and their employment is usually precarious or dangerous, if they're employed at all.

Government

The city of Kaboudaios is in an unusual position, being a thema in itself that only governs the territory of a single city. Being a result of the Treaty of Lazurion that brought the end of the Great Western War in Paloumaia, Kaboudaios is one of four parts of the former Lajvard Satrapy, which was dismantled to allow for greater control of the region from the Monarchy. Rather than an elected mayor in charge, like most cities have, Kaboudaios has an appointed Politarch, chosen by the Basileus from among his loyal statesmen and generals. The Politarch is in charge of administration on behalf of the monarchy and holds executive power within the thema. Beneath the Politarch, there is an elected thematic Synod made up of 38 mestors. The Synod is a unicameral legislature, unlike the National Synod which has two branches, though it functions in largely the same way.

Industry & Trade

Dominating the wide and navigable Lazurion River, Kaboudaios has long been a center of trade in the region. While the means of transport and trade have changed in recent times, this has done little to diminish the city's position. Great steamships carry goods to and from the southern coast while trains of goods and passengers come and go from the city's many train stations. Historically, the city prospered thanks to the fields surrounding the city where rice, tea, and citrus are grown. While agriculture is still important to the city, There have been attempts to diversify in recent years, leading to a major construction and manufacturing industry being developed.
