The Zaribon is a large, robust freshwater fish found in the lakes and rivers of southern Teros and northern Mar Mabon. Known for its size and aggressive nature, the Zaribon is both feared and sought after by fishers who view catching one as a test of skill and strength.
Physical Appearance
Zaribon can grow up to five feet long, with thick, muscular bodies covered in tough, dark bronze scales. Their wide mouths are filled with sharp teeth, and their powerful tails allow them to make sudden, rapid movements. Their fins are edged with a reddish hue, which makes them easy to identify in the waters they inhabit.
Habitat
Zaribon thrive in deep, slow-moving rivers and large lakes. In Teros, they can be found in the warmer southern lakes and sluggish rivers near the Festermere Swamps, while in Mar Mabon, they inhabit the deeper inland lakes where few other fish species can compete with their size and aggression.
Behaviour
Zaribon are apex predators in their environment, feeding on smaller fish, amphibians, and even waterbirds. They are solitary, territorial creatures and will fiercely defend their hunting grounds. Zaribon are most active at dawn and dusk, ambushing prey with swift, powerful strikes. During the breeding season in late spring, they migrate to shallower waters to spawn, though they remain highly aggressive during this time.
Geographic Distribution
Zaribon are common in the southern lakes and rivers of Teros, particularly in regions close to the Festermere Swamps. In Mar Mabon, they inhabit the northern lakes, where their presence limits the population of smaller fish species.
Interaction with People
The Zaribon is prized by experienced fishers for both its size and the challenge it presents, though catching one requires heavy gear and caution. Its flesh is tough and not widely eaten, though some regions smoke it to improve the taste. Legends in southern Teros speak of Zaribon attacking small boats, adding to their fearsome reputation. Fisherfolk in Mar Mabon, in contrast, view catching a Zaribon as a rite of passage, and its scales are sometimes used in ceremonial armor or tools.
