Thornfane

Thornfane is thorny shrub that thrives in the harsh arid conditions of Helerin. Its long, needle-like spines and thick, water-storing branches allow it to survive in dry landscapes, where it stands as a formidable obstacle to both wildlife and travelers.   Despite its defensive appearance, Thornfane occasionally produces beautiful, short-lived flowers.

Form and Appearance

Thornfane is a low-growing, thorny shrub. Its green branches are covered in long, sharp spines. The spines provide protection from animals that might otherwise seek to consume its water.   During the rare blooming season, Thornfane produces small, delicate blue flowers, though these blossoms only last for a short time.

Habitat

Thornfane is found in desert regions across Helerin, particularly in areas with rocky or sandy soil. The plant thrives in arid environments where water is scarce, and its deep roots allow it to access underground moisture. It is commonly found in the Naylin Desert and the drier parts of Mar Miskun, often growing in clusters or scattered patches across the landscape.

Geographic Distribution

Thornfane is native to the Naylin Desert, but it is also found in the Charred Hills and Penstrarn Hills of Mar Miskun. It does not grow outside of the arid regions, as it requires the extreme conditions of the desert to survive.   The plant is a common sight in the deserts of southern Helerin.

Uses

Due to its sharp spines, Thornfane is not often harvested by people. However, in times of extreme drought, the plant’s fleshy body can be carefully cut open to access the water stored within. The process is dangerous due to the spines, but some desert-dwelling people have learned techniques to safely extract the water.   Additionally, Thornfane’s flowers, though rare, are highly prized for their beauty and are sometimes used in decorative arrangements or as offerings in desert temples.
