The Pitressa is a colossal spider species native to the treacherous Burning Peaks of Mar Mabon. Towering at an unimaginable height, these arachnids are among the most feared creatures in the region. Their size and deadly hunting techniques make them a source of nightmares for those living near their territories. Known for their massive webs and deadly venom, Pitressas have become legendary among the people of Helerin.
Physical Appearance
Standing over 30 feet tall, with a leg span of up to 25 yards, the Pitressa is an awe-inspiring and terrifying sight. Its exoskeleton is a mottled black and dark brown, providing camouflage against the rocky, shadowed landscapes of the Burning Peaks. Each of its eight legs is equipped with sharp, hooked claws, allowing the Pitressa to climb sheer rock faces with ease. The creature’s eyes gleam with a cold intelligence, and its fangs, dripping with paralytic venom, are long enough to pierce the thickest hides.
Habitat
Pitressas are found exclusively in the desolate regions of the Burning Peaks in Mar Mabon. These mountainous areas, filled with narrow passes, deep canyons, and volcanic landscapes, provide the ideal setting for the Pitressas’ hunting methods. They spin enormous webs across the valleys and mountain passes, effectively creating deadly traps for any creature unfortunate enough to cross their path. The volatile and dangerous terrain of the Burning Peaks allows Pitressas to remain largely undisturbed by people, although some brave adventurers or desperate travelers occasionally venture into their lairs.
Behaviour
Pitressas are solitary and highly territorial predators. They patrol their hunting grounds with relentless focus, using their webs and stealth to trap and paralyze prey. Their webbing is exceptionally strong, capable of holding even the largest creatures captive. Once a victim is caught, the Pitressa injects its venom, paralyzing the prey before wrapping it in silk for later consumption. The venom of the Pitressa also serves to break down the internal structure of its prey, allowing the spider to feed more efficiently. Despite their size, Pitressas are stealthy hunters, often lying in wait for days or even weeks, perfectly still, until their next meal wanders into their web.
Geographic Distribution
Pitressas are native only to the Burning Peaks of Mar Mabon, where their web-spinning and ambush tactics are well-suited to the rugged, volcanic terrain. They are rarely seen beyond this region, as the hostile environment and scarcity of large prey make the Burning Peaks an ideal hunting ground for these massive spiders. Travelers in other parts of Helerin need not fear encountering a Pitressa, though their legend has spread far beyond their native range.
Interaction with People
Encounters between people and Pitressas are rare, but when they do occur, they are often fatal. Pitressas see no distinction between animals and people when it comes to prey. Travelers or traders passing through the dangerous mountain passes of the Burning Peaks are most at risk, as the spiders' enormous webs are nearly invisible in the shadows. Despite their lethal nature, Pitressas are occasionally hunted for their silk, which is incredibly strong and valuable. However, such hunts are dangerous, often resulting in more loss of life than profit. The Pitressa is frequently invoked in tales and songs as a symbol of death, cunning, and insurmountable danger.
