Pine

The Pine tree is one of the most common and versatile trees found across the Helerin Archipelago. Its wood is widely used in construction, shipbuilding, and crafting, making it an essential resource for many of the island’s inhabitants. Pine trees are hardy, fast-growing, and capable of thriving in various climates, from the cooler highlands to coastal regions.

Form and Appearance

Pine trees are tall, straight evergreens with a characteristic needle-like foliage that forms dense clusters on their branches. The bark of the Pine tree is rough and scaly, ranging in color from grey to reddish-brown. Pine cones, the tree’s seed-bearing structures, are a common sight beneath its branches, and they are often gathered for both their seeds and their use in fire-starting. Pine trees can grow to great heights, with some species reaching over 100 feet tall, making them one of the largest tree species in Helerin.

Habitat

Pine trees are highly adaptable and can be found in a wide range of environments, from the dense forests of Forbin to the rocky highlands of Teros Major. They thrive in well-drained, sandy soils and are capable of withstanding both cold and dry conditions. Pines are commonly found in highland regions, coastal cliffs, and even in the more arid parts of the island where other trees might struggle to grow. Their ability to grow quickly and in large numbers makes them a dominant species in many forests.   Geographic Distribution Pine trees are widespread across the Helerin Archipelago, particularly in the temperate and cooler regions of Great Forbin, Remon, and the highlands of Teros Major. They are often seen in the Boswood, Nythran Forest, and the Redpeak Mountains, where their timber is harvested for various uses. Pine forests are also common along the coastal cliffs and hillsides, where their tall, sturdy trunks help anchor the soil.

Uses

Pine wood is widely used for construction, particularly in the building of homes, ships, and fortifications. Its lightweight yet strong wood makes it ideal for planks, beams, and roofing. Pine resin is harvested for use in sealing ships and waterproofing other wooden structures, while pine needles and cones are used as fire-starting materials or, in some cases, for crafting simple household items. The scent of pine is also valued, often used in incense or oils.   Additionally, pine trees play an important role in preventing soil erosion on the island’s cliffs and highlands, making them a valuable species both ecologically and economically.
