Pargam

The Pargam is a medium-sized, golden-hued fish that thrives in the open waters around the Helerin Archipelago. Known for its swift, nimble movements and tendency to swim in large shoals, the Pargam is a common target for fishing boats across the archipelago. Its versatile, flavorful meat has made it a staple in coastal communities, where it is often grilled or preserved for long-term storage.

Physical Appearance

The Pargam grows up to two feet in length, with pale golden scales that shimmer under the sunlight. Its streamlined body and wide fins allow it to dart quickly through the water, making it well-adapted for life in the open sea. The Pargam's large, reflective eyes help it navigate the often unpredictable waters, while its swift movements make it an elusive catch.

Habitat

Pargam are found throughout the open waters around Helerin, from the calmer coastal regions to the deeper expanses of the sea. They prefer temperate waters and are often spotted in large shoals, swimming near the surface or slightly below, where they feed on smaller fish, plankton, and aquatic plants. These fish are particularly abundant in the seas surrounding Remon and Mar Miskun.

Behaviour

Pargam are highly social fish, forming large shoals that move in synchronized patterns, allowing them to evade predators and fishers alike. They are active both day and night, though their movements become more erratic during breeding season in early summer, when their shoals swell in size as they gather to spawn. Their agile swimming and tight formations make them difficult to catch in large quantities, requiring skill from fishers.

Geographic Distribution

Pargam are widespread throughout the waters around Helerin, particularly in the open seas near Remon, Mar Miskun, and the southern coast of Teros Major. They are commonly fished in these regions, where their abundance and easy availability make them an important resource for local economies.

Interaction with People

The Pargam is a popular catch due to its versatile, mild-flavored meat, which can be grilled, smoked, or preserved. It is a staple in many coastal diets, providing a reliable source of protein year-round. Fishing for Pargam is often done with large nets, and while they are not difficult to catch, their nimble movements require careful technique to bring in substantial hauls. The fish’s golden scales are also sometimes used in decorative crafts, adding to its value beyond the dinner table.
