Nylotha

The Nylotha is a long, slender freshwater fish native to the deeper rivers and lakes of Teros Major and Mar Mabon. Its unusual coloration and scavenging habits make it well-known but rarely sought after as a food source. Nylotha are typically avoided by fishers due to their oily flesh and the belief that they bring ill fortune.

Physical Appearance

Nylotha can grow up to three feet in length, with smooth, dark blue or purple skin that allows them to blend into the murky waters they frequent. They have wide mouths filled with fine, needle-like teeth used for scavenging rather than active hunting. Their large eyes are adapted to low-light conditions, allowing them to navigate in deep or shaded waters.

Habitat

Nylotha are found in the deep, slow-moving waters of Teros’ rivers and lakes, particularly in regions with rich aquatic plant life and submerged debris. They thrive in the quieter waters of Mar Mabon's lakes, where they scavenge along the bottom, feeding on dead fish and organic matter.

Behaviour

A nocturnal species, Nylotha are most active during the night, when they emerge from the depths to feed. They are slow-moving and rarely pose a threat to other fish, relying on their scavenging behavior to sustain themselves. Their presence is often detected by the ripples they create as they skim near the surface.

Geographic Distribution

Nylotha are primarily found in the deeper waters of Teros Major and along the quiet lakes of northern Mar Mabon. They are less common in the faster-flowing rivers of Forbin and Remon, where the current and water clarity are less favorable to their scavenging lifestyle.

Interaction with People

Considered a nuisance by local fishers, the Nylotha is rarely harvested due to its oily, unpalatable flesh. However, some regions view their presence as an ill omen, believing that a sighting of Nylotha near the surface signals disaster or misfortune. They are sometimes used in folk remedies, but their role in daily life is minimal.
