The Krethgorr is a colossal, fearsome crustacean that inhabits the coastal waters and beaches of Helerin. Known for its immense size and thick, armored exoskeleton, the Krethgorr is a significant threat to coastal communities, particularly around Mar Mabon and the Seynan Islands. These creatures are both scavengers and predators, often feared for their aggressive tendencies and devastating attacks on fishing vessels.
Physical Appearance
Krethgorrs are massive creatures, standing over 15 feet tall and weighing several tons. Their exoskeleton is made up of dense, overlapping plates that provide exceptional protection, making them nearly impervious to most weapons. The exoskeleton ranges in color from deep red to dark brown, allowing them to blend in with the rocky coastlines and seabeds they inhabit.
Their bodies are supported by multiple jointed legs, each tipped with sharp, claw-like appendages that enable them to walk both underwater and, for short periods, on land. The most dangerous feature of the Krethgorr, however, is its massive pincers. These powerful claws are capable of crushing wood, stone, and even metal, making them a dire threat to boats and coastal structures.
Habitat
Krethgorrs inhabit the coastal waters and beaches of Mar Mabon and the Seynan Islands. They are most commonly found in shallow waters near rocky outcroppings or reefs, where they can easily scavenge for food. Krethgorrs prefer areas rich in shipwreck debris, dead sea creatures, and other detritus, but they are also known to roam sandy beaches and tidal flats in search of prey.
These creatures are able to survive on land for brief periods, usually no more than an hour or two, as long as their gills remain moist. During these excursions, Krethgorrs drag themselves across beaches and coastal plains in search of food, though they usually return to the sea after scavenging.
Behaviour
Krethgorrs are primarily scavengers, feeding on dead sea creatures, shipwreck debris, and any other organic material they come across. Despite this, they are also opportunistic predators and will not hesitate to attack smaller boats or even coastal settlements if provoked or if food is scarce.
These creatures are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their feeding grounds from other predators, including people. Krethgorrs are solitary by nature, only coming together to mate. Their aggressive behavior and territoriality make them a danger to anyone venturing too close to their waters, especially during breeding season.
When hunting or scavenging, Krethgorrs use their massive pincers to break apart debris or crush prey. Their strength is unmatched in the coastal ecosystems of Helerin, and they have been known to overturn small boats or tear through fishing nets with ease. Despite their immense size, Krethgorrs are surprisingly fast and agile in water, allowing them to close in on their prey with startling speed.
Geographic Distribution
Krethgorrs are most commonly found around the coastal waters of Mar Mabon and the Seynan Islands. In Mar Mabon, they are often seen near the Lost Coast, where the treacherous waters and shipwrecks provide them with ample scavenging opportunities. Along the Seynan Islands, they inhabit the shallow waters around the more remote isles, far from the settled towns and villages.
While Krethgorr sightings are rare around more populated shores, they are an ever-present threat in the more isolated and dangerous coastal regions of Helerin.
Interaction with People
Krethgorrs are feared by coastal communities and sailors alike. Their ability to crush boats and drag them underwater has made them a subject of numerous sea legends. Fishermen and traders in Mar Mabon and the Seynan Islands often tell tales of the Krethgorrs dragging entire ships beneath the waves, never to be seen again.
Despite their danger, the chitinous exoskeletons of Krethgorrs are highly prized. Some brave or foolish hunters attempt to take them down to harvest their armor plates, which can be used to craft protective gear. However, hunting Krethgorrs is an incredibly risky endeavor, as even a small mistake can lead to a deadly encounter.
Most people avoid Krethgorr territory altogether, setting up watchtowers and patrols along beaches to warn of their approach. In some cultures, particularly among the islanders of the Seynan archipelago, Krethgorrs are seen as omens of impending disaster, and offerings are sometimes left on beaches in the hope of appeasing these mighty creatures.
