The Karree is a large, predatory freshwater fish native to the rivers and lakes of southern Forbin, Teros Major, and the northern shores of Mar Mabon. Known for its distinctive sharp scales and aggressive hunting behavior, the Karree is both feared and respected by those who live near its waters. This fish plays an important role in local ecosystems but also poses a threat to smaller aquatic species and, at times, unwary people.
Physical Appearance
Karree are sleek, streamlined fish that can grow up to four feet in length, though most range between two and three feet. Their most striking feature is the series of razor-sharp, diamond-shaped scales along their sides, which give them a glittering appearance under sunlight. These scales are a dull gray or silver, often streaked with darker stripes. The Karree's mouth is wide, with rows of serrated teeth designed for catching and holding prey. Its large, reflective eyes are positioned high on its head, aiding its ambush tactics. The fish's powerful, spined fins allow for quick bursts of speed, making it a formidable predator.
Habitat
Karree are primarily found in large rivers and deep lakes with slow-moving currents. They prefer areas with rocky bottoms and underwater caves, where they can hide and wait for unsuspecting prey. In Forbin, the broad rivers of Dhara and Nyron are prime habitats, while in Teros, they are most often found lurking in the lakes of the central plains. Though not common in coastal areas, the Karree is occasionally spotted near the estuaries of Mar Mabon, where fresh and saltwater meet.
Behaviour
Karree are solitary creatures that are highly territorial. They maintain hunting grounds and will aggressively defend them from intruders, including other Karree. Their diet consists mainly of smaller fish, amphibians, and occasionally waterfowl. Karree are ambush predators, lying in wait beneath rock outcroppings or in the shadows of submerged vegetation before launching quick, deadly attacks on passing prey. They are also known for their ability to leap out of the water to catch low-flying birds or animals near the shore.
During the breeding season, which occurs in late summer, Karree migrate upstream to shallower waters to spawn. Males become particularly aggressive at this time, often engaging in fierce battles over mates. Females lay large clusters of eggs in secluded areas, which are guarded until they hatch.
Geographic Distribution
Karree are primarily found in southern Forbin, where the Dhara and Nyron Rivers provide ideal conditions. They are also common in the lakes and slow-moving rivers of Teros Major, particularly in the central and southern regions. In Mar Mabon, they are less common but can be found near the northern shores, where freshwater sources mix with the sea. The Karree's range extends into the wilds of Teros Minor, though sightings there are rare due to the more arid conditions and scarcity of large bodies of water.
Interaction with People
Forbin’s fisherfolk regard the Karree with a mixture of caution and admiration. While its meat is tough and somewhat oily, it is considered a delicacy in certain regions, particularly when dried and smoked. However, catching a Karree is dangerous, as they have been known to bite through fishing lines or even attack those wading in shallow waters. Nets are the preferred method of capture, though this requires great skill and timing to avoid the fish's sharp scales and teeth.
In Teros, stories abound of Karree attacking small boats or swimmers who venture too close to their territory. They are regarded as an ill omen by some, believed to bring bad luck to those who see one breach the water’s surface.
Despite their fearsome reputation, some bold fishers have sought to capture and breed Karree in controlled environments. However, their aggressive nature makes this a difficult and often perilous endeavor.
