Fort Wisrin

The crumbling remains of Fort Wisrin stand forlorn atop a low rise in the heart of Gilrim, their jagged silhouette a reminder of a long-forgotten rebellion that nearly tore the region apart.   Over a thousand years ago, Lord Raspan Hoddarth defied the authority of the Lord Guardian of Gilrim, raising his banner in open rebellion. His defiance was crushed swiftly and brutally, and Fort Wisrin—once a proud stronghold—was razed to the ground as a warning to others. Today, only scattered stones and the faint outlines of walls remain, swallowed by creeping vines and tall grasses.   Time and weather have not been kind to the ruins. The main keep is little more than a shattered shell, with broken stones strewn across the landscape like the bones of some great, fallen beast. The outer walls have collapsed in many places, forming heaps of rubble interspersed with stubborn shrubs and twisted roots. The site is eerily silent, save for the occasional whisper of wind through the cracks and crevices, carrying with it the scent of earth and decay. Few venture here, save for the curious or the foolhardy.   Despite the ruinous state of Fort Wisrin, rumours persist of a hidden vault buried deep beneath the rubble—an ancient chamber where Lord Hoddarth, in his final days, is said to have hidden his wealth and forbidden relics. The existence of this vault is widely dismissed as myth, a tale spun by generations of treasure seekers hoping to find glory and riches in a place marked by tragedy. Yet those who have spent time among the ruins speak of strange sounds echoing from below and of unexplained disturbances in the earth, as if something beneath the surface is stirring.   Local legend holds that Lord Hoddarth’s rebellion was more than just a political revolt. It is whispered that he dabbled in dark and unnatural magics, forging pacts with entities best left unnamed. Some say that his power did not die with him and that the fort was destroyed not merely to crush his rebellion, but to seal away something terrible that now lies entombed within its depths. These tales have given Fort Wisrin a reputation as a haunted place, shunned by locals and travellers alike.   Despite these dark legends, the ruins occasionally attract the attention of adventurers and scholars hoping to uncover lost knowledge or prove the existence of the hidden vault. Most return empty-handed, if they return at all, for the ruins are treacherous. Unstable ground, hidden pits, and sharp stone edges are a constant hazard. The earth itself seems to shift and settle with each passing year, as if the land remembers the turmoil that shattered the fort’s foundations.
