Fort Hassar

Fort Hassar stands at the windswept tip of Mar Miskun's western coast, a lone bastion overlooking the churning waters of the Gamanaean Ocean. The fort is perched on a rugged promontory, its walls blending with the grey stone cliffs that rise abruptly from the sea.   Though small in size and lightly defended, Fort Hassar is an important point of control for the city of @ashan, providing both a military presence and a harbour for its patrol boats that keep watch over the western approaches. The fort’s primary purpose is to serve as a resupply point for the small flotilla of patrol boats that monitor the western coast of Mar Miskun. These swift, agile vessels are tasked with deterring piracy and smuggling.   The fort’s modest structure comprises a single, sturdy keep surrounded by a curtain wall that encircles the main courtyard. The keep itself is a squat, two-storey building with narrow windows and a flat roof. A small watchtower juts from the southeast corner, offering a commanding view over the coastline and the harbour below. The harbour, with its sheltered, deep-water docks, is the fort’s greatest asset, allowing League vessels to berth safely in all but the most severe weather conditions.

The garrison at Fort Hassar is led by Captain Gorvik Tarfell, a career soldier and seasoned mariner who has spent the better part of two decades patrolling the western seas. Known for his pragmatic approach to command, Captain Tarfell runs the fort with a minimal staff of only thirty soldiers and sailors. These men and women serve as the fort’s defenders, as well as crew for the patrol boats that use Hassar’s docks. The soldiers here are accustomed to long periods of inactivity punctuated by sudden bursts of action, as the patrols chase down any corsairs or smugglers foolish enough to risk the League’s ire.   Despite its relatively low level of activity, Fort Hassar is well-maintained. The keep and walls are kept free of encroaching vegetation, and the stonework is regularly inspected for damage caused by the relentless salt winds that scour the coast. The main courtyard is open and spacious, used primarily for storing supplies and equipment needed to maintain the fort’s vessels. Small wooden sheds house additional provisions, and a single, open-fronted boathouse at the foot of the cliff provides shelter for the patrol boats when not in use.   The interior of the keep is functional, with only the barest amenities for its inhabitants. Captain Tarfell’s quarters occupy the top floor, where he has a clear view of both the ocean and the narrow, winding path that leads up from the harbour to the fort’s main gate. Below, the soldiers share a common barracks, their bunks arranged with military precision, and a small armoury is stocked with a limited supply of weapons and ammunition. Though the fort lacks the grandeur or scale of many other League fortifications, it is nonetheless a vital link in the chain of coastal defences that safeguard Mar Miskun.   Captain Tarfell’s leadership has ensured that the soldiers and sailors stationed at Fort Hassar remain alert and disciplined. Though some may chafe at the isolation and monotony of service at this remote post, they know that any lapse in vigilance could have dire consequences. The open sea is both a refuge and a danger, and the League’s hold over its western waters depends in no small part on the steady presence of Fort Hassar and its dedicated crew.   The fort’s harbour, while small, is equipped to handle a variety of vessels, from sleek patrol boats to merchant ships seeking a safe haven during storms. The deep-water docks are flanked by steep, rocky cliffs, with a narrow, winding path leading up to the fort’s main gate. This path is guarded at intervals by small stone outposts, each manned by a single watchman, who signals the approach of any incoming ship or visitor.   In the evenings, when the sea is calm and the horizon is painted in hues of orange and red, Fort Hassar takes on a sombre beauty, its grey stone walls and watchtower silhouetted against the setting sun.
