Fort Firinad
Fort Firinad stands as a crumbling sentinel amidst the choppy waters of the Sea of Fair Winds, approximately 17 miles out from the bustling port city of Mintrass. Once a key outpost built to guard the approach to the Forbin Channel, the fort’s strategic position made it a critical component of Forbin’s coastal defences. Over the centuries, however, the fortress has been abandoned and left to the mercy of the relentless sea winds and waves, its once-proud walls and towers now little more than ruined shells rising above the rocky island that it calls home.
The remaining structure of Fort Firinad is bleak and isolated, its silhouette broken and weathered by time. Most of the outer walls have crumbled into the surrounding waters, while the few standing remnants are pocked with gaps and scars. A single leaning tower still stands precariously, a grim reminder of the fortress’s former strength. The interior is a labyrinth of rubble-strewn courtyards, eroded chambers, and treacherous stairways that lead nowhere. Sea spray and salt have rendered much of the stone slick and treacherous, making exploration hazardous even for the most experienced adventurers.
Despite its ruinous state, Fort Firinad has found new inhabitants in recent times. Corsairs, emboldened by the lack of direct oversight, have begun using the crumbling fort as a staging ground for their operations, taking advantage of its obscurity and proximity to the busy trade routes around Mintrass. These sea raiders have turned the ruins into a hidden base from which they launch daring raids on merchant vessels and fishing boats plying the waters of the Sea of Fair Winds. With Fort Firinad providing them a safe haven, the corsairs have become increasingly bold, striking deeper into the Forbin Channel and even targeting supply ships meant for Mintrass’s powerful eastern fleet.
The presence of these corsairs has not gone unnoticed, and tensions are rising in Mintrass. Lord Guardian Yan Ghernon, ruler of the Bostin region and the de facto authority over Mintrass, has issued warnings to ships travelling near the fort. However, his naval forces are already stretched thin defending the harbour and maintaining order along the coast. With Lord Ghernon focused on ensuring the prosperity and stability of Mintrass, he has delegated the responsibility of dealing with the corsair threat to his subordinate, Commodore Hestian Valt. The Commodore, a stern and capable officer, commands the fleet based at Mintrass but lacks the resources to eliminate the corsairs entirely without compromising other essential operations.
Recently, however, a high-profile incident has forced Lord Ghernon’s hand. A convoy carrying a substantial shipment of steel and timber - essential supplies for the shipyards of Mintrass - was ambushed and captured by the corsairs just a few miles from the city’s harbour. Outraged by the brazenness of the attack, Lord Ghernon has declared that the corsairs must be driven out of Fort Firinad at any cost.
