Brossa

The Brossa is a formidable predator of the deep ocean, known for its striking appearance and aggressive hunting behavior. Found primarily in the Sea of Zarroth, this medium-sized fish is a prized catch among experienced fishers due to its rich, flavorful meat. The Brossa is often sought after by coastal markets and communities across Helerin.

Physical Appearance

The Brossa grows up to two feet in length, with a sleek, muscular body adorned with deep grey and silver stripes. These stripes provide excellent camouflage in the darker waters of the deep ocean. Its sharp fins and powerful tail allow it to move swiftly in pursuit of prey, while its wide mouth is lined with small but sharp teeth, ideal for catching smaller fish and sea creatures.

Habitat

The Brossa prowls the deep waters of the Sea of Zarroth, preferring the cooler, shadowy depths where it can remain hidden from larger predators. It is most commonly found near underwater cliffs and rocky formations, which offer both shelter and hunting grounds. The fish’s ability to navigate strong ocean currents makes it well-suited to life in these turbulent waters.

Behaviour

As a predator, the Brossa is highly aggressive, hunting smaller fish, crustaceans, and other sea creatures. It patrols its territory alone, using bursts of speed to chase down prey. The fish is most active during twilight hours, when it rises closer to the surface to hunt, though it spends most of its time in the deep ocean. Due to its solitary and territorial nature, Brossa are rarely seen in large numbers.

Geographic Distribution

The Brossa is primarily found in the Sea of Zarroth, where its deep-water habitat and strong territorial instincts limit its range to more isolated areas. While fishers occasionally spot them near the northern coasts of Teros and Mar Mabon, they are most often caught far from shore, where the ocean is deeper.

Interaction with People

Catching a Brossa is a challenge, requiring strong nets and experienced crews. Fishers targeting the Brossa must be prepared for its strength and speed, as it can easily evade weaker traps. Despite the difficulty of the catch, the Brossa’s rich, flavorful meat makes it a highly prized commodity in the markets of Helerin. The fish is often grilled or smoked, and its silver-striped scales are sometimes used in decorative items or crafts.
