Areem

Areem is a fiery spice-bearing shrub known for its small, intensely flavored fruits. Widely cultivated in the river valleys of Teros Major and Mar Mabon, the fruits of the Areem bush add a distinctive heat to dishes and are used both fresh and dried. The shrub is an essential part of local agriculture, providing a popular and versatile ingredient in Helerin cuisine.

Form and Appearance

Areem is a medium-sized, bushy shrub with sturdy, dark green leaves and small, bright red fruits that grow in clusters. The shrub can reach up to 6 feet in height, with a rounded, compact form. Its branches are thick and woody, making the plant resilient to the strong winds and variable weather often found in its native habitats. The fruits of the Areem bush are small, about the size of a marble, and contain numerous seeds that contribute to the plant’s intense spiciness.

Habitat

Areem thrives in the warm, fertile soils of river valleys, where the moisture from nearby waterways helps sustain the plant through the drier months. It prefers full sunlight but can tolerate partial shade, especially in regions where summer temperatures are particularly high. The shrub is well-suited to areas with mild winters and long, hot summers, making it a staple crop in many of the riverine regions of Teros and Mar Mabon.

Geographic Distribution

Areem is primarily cultivated in the river valleys of Teros Major and Mar Mabon, where it is an important crop for both local consumption and export. The shrub is especially common along the banks of the River Rast in Teros and the rivers flowing from the Burning Peaks in Mar Mabon. Though its cultivation is widespread in these areas, the spice produced by Areem is used across the archipelago, valued for its fiery flavor.

Uses

The fruits of the Areem bush are harvested for their intense heat and are a key spice in many Helerin dishes. Both the fruits and seeds are used, with the seeds being particularly prized for their ability to add a fiery kick to savory foods. Areem spice is used fresh in cooking or dried and ground into a powder that can be stored for long periods.   In addition to its culinary uses, Areem is also used in traditional medicine, where it is believed to help stimulate digestion and improve circulation.
