Torlenaid

Torenaid are a form of magical artifice derived from the decorative system of carved or illustrated knotwork endemic to the Autumnvale, the use of which is to incapacitate or imprison powerful magicians.   As many types of foreign magic are proscribed due to either long-held local customs or Credasvaric dogma, the sages of the Autumnvale instead turned to their sacred crafts for defence against those other, "sinister schools" and those who wield them. Compared to the magic of the Autumnvale, which is buried under numerous levels of abstraction, ritual, and symbolism, Torlenaid are most effective against practitioners of magical traditions which are more codified, tuitionary, and cerebral, such as those practiced in Westwythe and Bergeaux. This is due to their twisting, maze-like patterns inducing a fixated trance in the target, wherein all of their attention and focus is absorbed in the arcane, twisting knots which appear to constantly move before their eyes.   The ritual crafting which produces Torlenaid can be performed using a variety of materials, including carved wood and stone, cast bronze and gold, or vivid illuminations on parchment. Some recorded applications include hiding them in "booby-trapped" books and scrolls, or emblazoned on trees or stones to trap those who approach a given area.
