One World Academy - Fiction from Adam Nathaniel Davis

One World Academy

I know of no finer way to wipe my arse than with a degree issued from One World Academy.
Carlotta Duarte, CEO of Canadian Royal Enterprises
O
ne World Academy is a complete educational system, founded and operated exclusively by Hegemony International, for the sole benefit of its employees - but primarly, for its clones (M&Ms).

Public Agenda

O
utwardly, the Academy is something of a public relations coup. Hegemony goes to great lengths to herald its offer of a free education to any-and-all employees, and they go to great lengths to advertise this benefits whenever they are trying to bolster themselves in the job market.

Farce
However, this free "education system" is understandably seen by many people - inside and outside of the organization - as something of a farce. While it is true that any Hegemony employee can attend Academy courses, at any time, completely free of charge, a large portion of the curriculum is geared solely toward providing primary-level instruction to the company's growing legion of clones.

Business Administration
Beyond the primary level, the Academy only offers a single degree - a Bachelor's in Business Administration. And that degree is universally understood to be so hopelessly geared toward the specific vagaries of the company's culture that it's generally dismissed as being worthless in the broader business community. Even if an employee truly wishes to pursue the Academy's lone degree offering, the experience of attending classes surrounded by a phalanx of disturbingly-similar clones is widely considered to be... unnerving.

Clown College
The public perception of One World Academy has led some to refer to it, derisively, as the Clone College. And for many who harbor unabashed prejudices against clones, they've taken it a step further by labeling the Academy as the Clown College, although such a name is never uttered in the presence of Hegemony executive management.

History

egemony Labs produced their first "official" human clone in the year 2000. (Unofficially, they are rumored to have developed human clones a number of years prior.) Although the cloning program was ostensibly initiated to meet commercial needs, the company quickly ramped up operations to meet Reginald Howell's vision of a largely-cloned workforce. Once the initial batch of clones reached school age, it became apparent that some operation would be needed to teach (and... indoctrinate) these clones in preparation for their life as Hegemony employees. Thus was born the One World Academy.

Demography and Population

I
n theory, the population of Academy students can consist of any Hegemony employees. All Academy course are free-of-charge for Hegemony staff, and at any point in time there is a tiny percentage of the student body that consists of active employees burnishing their skills in a given area.

Clones
In practice, the vast majority of all students consist of the company's clones (i.e., future M&Ms). While all employees are welcome to attend Academy courses, the curriculum is viewed - both inside-and-outside of the organization - as being solely targeted to the ongoing training of Hegemony's clones.

Technological Level

A
lthough the Academy does provide basic instruction in core sciences and technology, it is not seen as a viable institution for specialization in such areas. Students are taught only the bare minimum that is required for their graduates to be seen as scientifically and technologically "literate".

Education

T
he Academy's curriculum is far more extensive than any traditional college experience. It is responsible for taking clone children through the entire process of primary education (known in the United States as "K-through-12"). Young clones learn all the basics of reading, writing, arithmetic, and the core sciences while attending the Academy in their formative years.
If my parents raised me as The Academy raises its clones, I surely would have murdered them in their sleep.
Jean Baptiste Leon, Haitian politician
Parenting
However, the primary courses extend well beyond the basic skills taught to most civilian schoolchildren. Clones also receive instruction in social graces, hygeine, fashion sense, money management, basic morality, and many other subjects that would typically be reserved for a "normal" student's parents.

Indoctrination
Once clones have graduated from their primary studies, they then set about earning a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the Academy. Although these courses are generally analogous to those offered by any typical liberal-arts university, they're infused with a severe emphasis on the particular business practices of Hegemony International. Academy students are offered a slim menu of elective courses that allow them to gain middling expertise in broader areas of th arts or sciences. But every single clone graduates with the same core degree - the Bachelor's in Business Administration.

Infrastructure

T
he Academy has a major campus on every continent except Antarctica. Aside from these main campuses, robust educational facilities can be found in nearly any city where Hegemony maintains a significant footprint. These facilities are typically tucked away in the compucombs.
