The Elders
This hum of activity and commerce attracts dwarves from all walks of life around the city but none more so than the aged. Dwarves often either choose to retire from their craft at around 300 years of age or are replaced and granted indefinite leave to be able to enjoy the twilight years in peace and leisure. For many, however, they have taken it upon themselves to attend these artisanal crafting halls. Some say it is just to be in the vicinity of those currently practicing their art, others say it is a way of handling a form of loss. One thing is for certain though. They will always have the time to critique the specifics of a hammer strike or the angle at which a chisel is being driven into stone. Many common phrases can be heard echoing in the halls alongside the industrial sounds. Phrases such as “Oh, I wouldn’t have done it like that” or “Are you sure you want to use that type of hammer?”. Another phrase that particularly rings loudly in the artisan’s ears is “Back in my day, we did it like this…”. Some elders are actively rehired after their suggested retirement age to consult with artisans and share their extensive knowledge. However much these particular elders that choose to wander the artisan halls would like to believe, they are not said consultants. Instead, they work diligently day-to-day, slowing down the pace of craft and spreading doubt amongst those that are actively performing their duty. They ultimately choose to spread their extensive knowledge for free and without request. But, with all things, they are just attempting to hone their new-found craft and become true artisans of nostalgia and tradition. This is a submission for my second World Ember - I hope you enjoy the world I am building!
