Gellais Canyon
Gellais is a winding canyon that is crossed with rope bridges and carved with the home caves of villagers. Pulleys, hanging nets and waterwheels are used here to lift things vertically. Pinwheels and hanging plants are a popular decoration. Handrails and picket fences mark the paths.
Geography
A winding canyon with a minimal seasonal flora system. Small crevices span off from the main canyon but are too small to enter. The stone is banded with green and black ribbons of material. Small holes in the cliffs make homes for birds who carve them using a particular plant enzyme.
Ecosystem
Many birds, bats, snakes and small mammals make use of this natural windbreak. Just above the canyon the flat desert is very hot and windy. The small stream that winds the floor provides water, algae and insects to the wildlife. In the rainy season it becomes deadly and red markers, a flag tied to a metal stake, show that water level.
Ecosystem Cycles
Each new rainy season removes the lower plant life and colonization must happen all over again. Some areas are replanted with rice, onions, leeks by the villagers.
Localized Phenomena
The whistling rock is a formation of gappy stones that channel wind from above and howl and whistle as if musically played by an impish spirit.
Deep unexplored crevices divert from the main canyon and never fill fully with water, suggesting some large and deep underground spaces.
Fauna & Flora
Hyenamorphs were pushed out of these lands early in its settlement and no longer pose a serious threat. Birds and insects show remarkable diversity here as well as bats and small mammals such as kangaroo rats.
Many tough slow growing vines withstand the seasonal flooding, but most plants must re colonize from upstream each year. Those include algae and floating plants as well as long cereal grasses.
Natural Resources
Exotic spices are cultivated here, and precious gems are often found along with gold and quartz.
History
The canyon was discovered in 39 after a settlement scout expedition was lost and caught in ambush by hyenamorphs on the nearby plain. They tended their wounded in the canyon and waited out the dust storm that caused their disorientation. In the light of the stars they finally made their way back to return safely, marking the site on their maps for future travels.
Tourism
Cuisine from this region is sought after by travelers, as are spices and perfumes crafted by the locals. Prices are very high and very sparse accommodation is available.
