The Creation

How Hasela came to be

Summary

The world was created by Ao, spirit of light. IN the beginning, only she existed. She was lonely, however, and so created Pō'ele, darkness to be her companion; together they lived in harmony for millennia. Soon, they began to long for more companions, children to love and cherish. And so Honua, the earth, was created. She was the eldest of the gods, but was delighted when her twin brothers Lani and Kai, sky and sea, were born.   As Ao and Po'ele soon discovered, however, they could not see their children at the same time. One would always eclipse the other. Their love for their children was so great that they soon began to bicker and fight over who would visit when. Time went on and their squabbles turned to arguments, which turned to fights, and finally, war. Ao and Po'ele became so caught up in their fight that their wrath even affected their children. Ao's outbursts caused meteors and droughts, creating craters in Honua and causing Kai to evaporate. Po'ele's shadow caused the freezing of the earth and sky, turning everything to cold.   The breaking point of the war came after eons. One day, Ao became so angry that she flung a ball of pure fire at Po'ele- but it missed, instead flying into Honua's heart. As her shriek of pain rang out, her brothers rushed to her aid. When they saw what their parents had done with their pointless war, they realized that it could go on for no longer.   Lani and Kai rose up to take their parents down. First, they took hold of Ao, splitting her soul from her light; respectively they became 'Uhane, spirit, and Wela, flame. Po'ele, too, was separated; his darkness became Maka, shadow, and his soul became Kino, body. From these new spirits came the world Hasela as we know it today.

Historical Basis

The molten core at the center of the earth is tied to the fireball that Ao sent, leading to the start of tectonic movement. This created the island on which our story is set. This event also led to fractions of Honua being broken off, eventually forming into the five moons of Hasela. The existence of space and the stars (especially the sun) is tied to Maka and Ahi, respectively. Uhane and Kino are linked to the creation of animal life on the planet, especially those of sentient races.

Spread

The myth is common for all those on the island. There are those who deny it, but they are hidden away, refusing to members of a society that believes this myth.

Variations & Mutation

The original myth has been transformed in a few ways. The most major dispute is over the character/morality of the spirits. Some say that both Ao and Po'ele loved each other and always did. Some say that they hated each other from the start, becoming bitter enemies and creating the minor gods to fight the other. Some say that Ao and Po'ele still loved each other, even when they fought.   The general consensus, however, is that Wela and Maka are those parts of the two that hated each other, remaining polar opposites to this day; Kino and 'Uhane, then, are the parts that didn't, which is why they work together so well as body and soul.
