Zagreus

the Child God, the Tenderfooted

The Child God, Tenderfoot

"The Child God walked Harrow for one thousand days and one thousand nights, but still he could find no gift to sway his lover's heart..."
-Song of Chthonic lovers

Divine Domains

Zagreus is the god of blood, youth, romantic love, battle, percussion instruments, persistence, hope, and flowers (except one). Zagreus has many followers, perhaps being the most popular of the Chthonic gods because of his appeal to emotions. He’s often the hero in many myths, daringly fighting massive monsters to rescue lovers, claim treasure, or some other heroic purpose.

Artifacts

Being a veteran of many battles and wars, Zagreus has wielded hundreds of weapons over the years and most of them don't stand out much. Occasionally, an incarnation will leave a weapon to their offspring and those are often kept in the family for generations and treated with veneration.
The only exception is the Kettenhund. Wielded by Zagreus in the last war against the Archons, the Kettenhund can only be described as a beartrap on a fifteen foot chain. Incredibly dangerous and great at crowd control this weapon cemented itself as Zagreus' most iconic weapon.

Holy Books & Codes

The Song of the Chthonic Lovers tells the story of Zagreus' and Detura's relationship and is often considered a holy "text" of sorts. It did, however, begin life as a lullaby and saw many centuries of cultural iteration before being committed to writing.   There are also various myth collections featuring Zagreus. He's nearly always either a romantic interest or slaying mythic monsters. Often both as is the case in Bride of the Sea.

Tenets of Faith

Edicts Anathema
  • Embrace romantic love; courtship is the first half of the greatest thing in life.
  • Promote joy in children; youth is beautiful but brief. Infuse it with all the joy you can.
  • Be brave; never turn your back on a battle, even if the odds are against you.
  • Undermine a loving relationship.
  • Allow a child to be harmed.
  • Surrender to an enemy you morally oppose.
  • Destroy flowers.

Holidays

In the Tiers, there's a festival every Zaguary (March) called the Fest of Hope. This dates back to the Age of Archons when Zagreus called a ceasefire during the Conquest of the Tiers on the birthday of Ashe, the Archon of War. In modern days the tradition is kept. War in the Tiers ceases on this day, or at least outright conflict, in favor of feasts, games, and community gatherings.

Social

Family Ties

It's well known that Zagreus is deeply in love with Datura who only partially returns these affections. He also has been known to take mortal lovers rather frequently.   Although the youngest of the gods, he's protective of his brother, Hukoreise. Priests of Zagreus often seek out the next incarnation of the death god to rescue him from the fate that usually awaits him at the hands of mortal parents.

On Alignment

Though my tables will never observe strict alignment adherence, there are those who find knowing what alignments are common among a god's followers can be useful for roleplaying a faithful. In Zagreus' case, neutral good, true neutral, and any chaotically aligned characters would be right at home among his faithful.
