Jorōgumo and Tsuchigumo

Historical Account

The jorōgumo lived in Svar-loka’s Gate before the fomoire rose to power. The environment of Svar-loka’s gate when the jorōgumo were around as it is in modern day. Like the fomoire, the jorōgumo had adapted ways to keep the jubokko at bay. They introduced tsuchigumo into their bodies at a young age. The tsuchigumo were many tiny spiders that fed their host’s aura. The jorōgumo could command the tsuchigumo to leave their bodies for defensive and offensive purposes.

These spiders weave a multitude of webs to coat their host’s body in a protective covering. They would also use their webs to pin down an attacker. They could feed off another creature’s aura as freely as their host’s. They fed off an attacker’s aura to drain away their energy, leaving them exhausted and unable to escape. The tsuchigumo would always return to their host, as the jorōgumo was the colony’s leader, their home, and their protector.

The tsuchigumo changed the jorōgumo‘s body similarly to how the burach bhadi changed the fomoir’s body. The jorōgumo had long fangs and four spider-like eyes thanks to the tsuchigumo. Their skin color also changed to the color of the spiders inside them. Each colony of jorōgumo had different colored tsuchigumo. Some were black, brown, white, or red. Others had unique patterns of different colors.

The tsuchigumo hid their host’s aura from the jubokko trees. The tsuchigumo were also toxic for the trees to feed off of. But the jubokko evolved faster than the spiders. Eventually, the jubokko adapted to sense the spiders and became immune to their toxins. Over the years, both the jorōgumo and tsuchigumo were destroyed.

Jorōgumo From Japanese Lore

The jorōgumo is one of the most well known arachnid yokai. They are small spiders but can grow to sizes large enough to catch small birds. They are brightly colored and weave impressive webs. When a jorōgumo reaches four-hundred years old they gain mystical powers. They start preying on humans, usually young men, instead of insects. The jorōgumo are Kuching and deadly. When they spot a man to prey on they change shape to a beautiful young woman to lure their prey into their home. They spun webs that not even the strongest of men could break free. They infected their prey with venom and fed off them over a long period of time.

Tsuchigumo From Japanese Lore

Tsuchigumo are arachnid yokai. They are massive spiders that love feeding off of humans. Tsuchigumo live in forests and mountains. They made their homes out of silken tubes where they ambushed their prey. The tsuchigumo used illusions and trickery to draw humans in and eat them. They also seduced men with their illusions to draw them in close enough to kill.
