Jörmungyalkri the Great Sea Serpent

Jörmungyalkri the Great Sea Serpent is the son of Njehu the Lord Of Whales, a Pradeyalkri servant of the god Sarajin. Njehu is a great gray whale who spends most of his time, sleeping on the sea bottom, but when roused can cause terrible storms at sea. Jörmungyalkri's mother is, Alaryr an Elkyri, she who most loves the sea: Ivinian mariners pray to her for favorable winds or calm seas in rough weather.

Jörmungyalkri was born to the sea, he grew into a great serpent and swam all the world's oceans and seas but most often the Sea of Ivae, where he caused great mischief sinking ships, eating fishermen, creating foul mists of that poisoned the fish, and sending great waves to wash away dwellings near the shore. A great lament arose from the people, they beseeched Sarajin to help end their suffering. Sarajin heard their cries and set out in his great long boat, Dhiveru, to hunt and snare Jörmungyalkri so he could no longer harm the people.

For forty days and forty nights Sarajin cast his line without success and Jörmungyalkri continued his misdeeds. So he asked Ylina wisest of the Elkyri for advice, seeing a chance to vex her rival Alaryr, she told Sarajin he needed better bait for his hook and to ask Peoni for Ox, an offspring of Maermal the Great Ox, servant of the the goddess Peoni. Peoni who had heard the suffering of Ivinia's people too, convinced Maermal to sacrifice one of his offspring, in exchange Sarajin agreed his followers would no longer persecute Peoni's priests.

So it was that Sarajin put to sea again and upon a great hook he set the head of the ox. In no time at all Sarajin had caught the greedy Jörmungyalkri and after a ten day had pulled him to the surface, where he sought to bind him in great chains. However, Jörmungyalkri was mighty, he blew atter into Sarajin's face, blinding and choking him, and the thrashing of Jörmungyalkri's great tail was swamping Dhiveru, causing her to sink. Growing angry and fearful Sarajin drew Fakang his Great Battleaxe and struck the serpent three mighty blows. Alaryr fearing for her son Jörmungyalkri's life cut the line holding him, whereupon a deeply wounded Jörmungyalkri sank to the ocean's bottom where it is said he rests recovering from his wounds until he can rise and take his vengence upon Sarajin. Tidal waves and earthquakes are blamed on Jörmungyalkri as he writhes in his agony deep on the ocean's floor.

Great article; weaving Peoni into the story was the last thing you expect with a Nordic legend.

Thanks for the compliment, I stole the story of Jörmungandr the Great Serpent from the Edda tales and added some Hârn Religion. It was a fun exercise and I enjoyed writing it. Now we have an explanation for tidal waves, earthquakes and poisonous gases from underwater volcanos and why Sarajinians tolerate clergy of Peoni.
