Haunted by what he’s done, Kael flees to the town archives and stumbles on something forbidden—a poem by a condemned “Agent of Dissonance” named Orin, and records of raucous festivals, messy arguments, and costly celebrations that once filled Oakhaven with joy. The poem cracks something inside him, awakening emotions his spinal implant was built to suppress, and triggering a terrifying wave of panic the Coil calls a sickness.
When the regime demands a final report declaring Oakhaven perfectly Unburdened, Kael commits a tiny act of rebellion: he replies, “The report is delayed.” That single lie sets him on a collision course with his oldest friend Vesper—an Unburdening Custodian whose sacred task is to cleanse away pain, doubt, and now, Kael himself.
Forced into exile among branded heretics in The Fray, Kael seeks out Orin and a hidden doctor named Lidia, who reveal the truth about the implant in his spine and place a contraband Bible in his hands. As Kael learns that the Coil’s “mercy” has cost humanity its soul, he must choose: return to the safety of engineered peace, or risk his life to feel fully—and ignite the first ember of a rebellion that could set the world ablaze with dangerous, redeeming grace.
