Magic

Magic is a supernatural force that occurs regularly in everyday life in Hanaq. The study of magic is widely practiced, as it is used for technology, healing, daily life, and combat. Magic is typically understood through runic words.

Spells and Casting

Magic is performed by casting Spells.

Components

Spells are classified through their components. Verbal components involve vocally uttering Runic Words. Material components require some matter to be transmuted. Somatic Components require specific movements and gestures of limbs.   Advanced spellcasters may learn special techniques or Kawsay to bypass some of these requirements. For example, Silent Spell allows a user to perform a spell without uttering the words required to perform it.

Tempo

The order and timing of these movements are incredibly precise must be done in Tempo. Tempo is the guiding beat at which a spell is performed. Words, movements, and material sacrifices must be performed on tempo for the spell to succeed.   The tempo of a spell is sometimes flexible, while other times it isn't. Some spells can have widely different effects when a caster changes the speed of the Tempo, while other spells are Tempo Agnostic and can be performed at any speed.

Difficulty

A spell is categorized into Difficulty Levels., ranking from levels 0 to 10.   Level 0 spells are usually 2-5 words long, have a very forgiving tempo, and have a lot of room for variation. Level 3 spells are typically 15 words long, a moderate tempo, and can be varied easily. Level 5 spells start to become several paragraphs long and are very tricky to vary, while Level 8 spells are long enough to fill a novel.   Longer spells are performed through several techniques.

Common Spell Techniques

Abstraction is a technique allows a caster to turn an entire block of runic words into a single movement, material component, or word.   Functionalization allows a caster to reuse common elements of abstraction to speed up the spell.   Fire or Air Kawsay allows the user to increase their Tempo to extreme rates, such as 174 BPM by entering Burn State. Some advanced Kawsay users can increase their Tempo to 1000 BPM.   Parallelization is a technique that allows a caster to offload some of the spells words or sections to a parallel processor like a familiar, spell-book, or focus.

Sorcery

Sorcery and and Charisma based casting is unique, in that a Charisma caster is able to Abstract and Functionalize spells with the mere force of their personality and Will instead of careful studying.

Familiar and Eidelons

Hanaq is a world filled with many Spirits. Spirits can be captured, befriended, or harnessed to create Familiars. Familiars can assist in combat and spellcasting. Summoners are those who either manifest a new spirit, or bond themselves to one permanently.

Magic Traditions

Magic is split into Four "Traditions". However, most people only know three of them: Arcane, Primal, and Occult Magic. Divine magic, the final tradition, is commonly feared and highly illegal in Esperanto.

Arcane Magic

Arcane magic is said to have come from dragons. It typically is regarded as the easiest magic type to learn. There are very few arcane Runic Words, the order the word's utterance can often be varied with great ease, and the words are often short   Certain arcane magic is strictly regulated by The Coven, a secretive society with great influence in Hanaq's more civilized areas.

Primal Magic

Primal magic is highly important in Hanaq and is tied to the Fairy race. Most fey towns will have at least one Level 2-4 primal spellcaster. Primal casters often serve as healers and aid some towns in having good harvests. Many druidic circles exist, but the largest is The Guardian Circle.   Primal magic is often regarded as the second easiest magic to learn. Most of the Runic Words are in Druidic: a language very similar to common. There are many Common Runic Words, and primal spells are often shorter than average.

Druid anathemas

Druid anathemas are not as heavily enforced in this game setting. Fairies are conduits of nature itself. As a result, some druid characters may not be as scrupulous as usual. For example, some psychotic fire druids do not dedicate themselves to protecting nature from wildfires, instead they take glee in using their fire magic to terrorize the innocent as criminals.

Occult Magic

Occult Magic was discovered relatively recently sometime before the founding of Esperanto. Certain occult magic is strictly regulated by The Coven, a secretive society with great influence in Hanaq's more civilized areas.   Occult magic is commonly considered to be the most difficult magic to learn. Its Runic Words are complicated, the tempos are rigid, and the risk of backfire is immense. However, Occult magic is also often regarded as the most powerful type of magic Occult spells can be used as a very potent source of energy.   Many Occult casters find it easier to literally perform the Tempo to a song. These are called Bards. Bards can Functionalize parts of a spell to lyrics of their own choosing.   Witches, on the other hand, utilize a Spirit Patron who travels with them to help cast a spell. Psychics are rare individuals who are capable of performing occult magic without the aid of music or familiars.

Divine Magic

Divine magic is rare. Many commoners either believe it's a myth, or are terrified of it. Many believe in The Severance an event that apparently nearly destroyed the universe that was caused by divine magic.   Divine magic in Hanaq does not come from a god or Runic Words, but rather from inner spiritual enlightenment. Runic words somewhat exist in the form of Prayers, but it is said high level Divine casters do not need to pray, but rather wish something into being. Deities, as far as anyone can see, do not exist in Hanaq. That does not mean there are no religions that believe in a deity, however, no major religion believes that it can ask its god for divine intervention without it working. This is because The Coven is dedicated to destroying all traces of divine magic.   The Coven fears the power of divine magic, and believes that if left unchecked, someone may become strong enough to achieve enlightenment. Many believe that if one was to achieve enlightenment, they would become a god and could destroy the universe with a mere thought.

Playing a class with divine spellcasting

The most common divine caster is an oracle. But Clerics and Paladins are allowed (deity list in progress)   It should be mentioned that any divine spellcaster will likely be treated as an outcast, and any commoner that recognizes that they're casting divine spells will be frightened, and may contact the authorities. Hanaq has an extreme prejudice against divine spellcasting. However, several underground cults and divine orders wish to discover the secrets of divine magic, either for good or evil reasons.
