Arcane Universities

Arcane Universities, colloquially known as "magic school," serve as the backbone for churning forth new Magisterium wizards for the Country of Halruaal. As such they are viewed as a source of pride, boasting, and a certain level of elitism. Most of the Nobility are graduates from regional schools run by those suitably trust by the Great Houses. Members of the Eight Great Houses, and sometimes even the Major Houses, are given special treatment and extra resources at the schools. These students are often afterwards they get further instruction at home by their parents or notable tutors.

While it is true that as a concept wizards can be trained through apprenticeship or individual study, the institutes of learning offer significant advantages. Safe refuges for expert training, laboratories for dangerous experiments, and environments for political networking make the Universities a more sought after opportunity. Among the Magisterium, perception dictates that going to one of the regional universities sets a new wizard apart from those that did not. Graduating from university is difficult, and graduating in the top of your class is usually an indicator of becoming a powerful member of the Magisterium or noble house. Most Magisterium wizards remain in school until they could at least excell at moderate magics (typically seen between casting 2nd or 3rd level spells).

The universities are generally expensive, with a notable exception of the Temple of Sight under House Romanos' rule. For the most part only children of wealthy merchants and noble scions can afford them. Though there have been exceptions to gifted individuals that have proven themselves. Each school teaches the basics of wizardry and magic up to potentially casting 4th level spells. In addition, the regional schools also highlight the fundamentals and specialties of the region in which they exist (i.e. The University under House Blackharbour focuses on the School of Conjuration). After graduation, the new wizard is inducted into the Magisterium and their spellbook is entered into the Hall of Record with the Library of their region and with the Grand library of House Udaku. Thus "all" wizards can be tracked and monitored.
