Ghouls and their role in Halladell
Ghouls are widely regarded as a common enemy by all the free people of Halladell. After the uprising that overthrew the Gods, there have been four exalted marches across the lands of Halladell. These were purges led by the former leaders of the revolution and current front runners of the new world order in Halladell. The marches' goal? To eliminate any remaining worshippers still loyal to the fallen Gods. Only through worship could the once all powerful Gods cling to life and existence. As their followers dwindled so too did their power. In theory, if all those loyal to an Archon were purged, then that Old God would cease to be entirely...
Eventually, the Old Gods' followers became so few that those remaining began to be known as Ghouls. Even though the marches have ended and it's been over two hundred years since the last purge, hunters continue to seek out and destroy any living Ghoul to this day.
There is often quite a bit of profit involved with taking down a Ghoul, but times have made finding one almost impossibly rare-- after all, there is only a handful left in the world. Taking down a Ghoul is no easy feat though. Unwilling to part with their final few supporters, the Archons of old have imbued the Ghouls loyal to them with unique and powerful abilities in exchange for their worship, making it incredibly dangerous to hunt these traitors to the free people.
If legends amongst the Ghoul Hunters are to be believed, apparently some Ghouls have even been known to give themselves over entirely for their God, becoming a true avatar to the unbridled Wrath that is the spited Gods of the Old World...
