Personal history

Daida has been raised for the throne from birth. Born in the Citadel of Katea, she was brought up on tales of glory and victory. She learned to expect reverence, to control her emotions completely, to wear a mask at every moment. Never the socialite, she preferred hunting and martial training to administration as a teenager- it allowed her to feel completely in control and able to express herself in a way that the rest of her life did not.
It was for this reason that she volunteered for The Golden Crusade at the age of 23. It played well with the romantic imagery of the Nakara family, the young heir to the serene dynasty going on crusade herself. Her campaign was not romantic in the least- it was a brutal slog that broke many of her illusions of honor and faith. She never dropped the facade of the romantic hero, but her cynicism has informed her policy. She has happily used blackmail, hostages, and threats to leverage power as monarch, and exploited her status to extract as much from the Crusade as possible for her kingdom and herself. 
Some of this has colored her reputation as a monarch- she is known as a shrewd and dangerous old queen. In some ways this has become part of her legend: the fierce romantic crusader who would do anything for her people. 
Ironically, the one person not swept up by her reputation is her heir and granddaughter, Adura. She is Daida's primary critic behind closed doors, and a fierce idealist.
