Introduction to Halcyon

When one journey ends, do not despair, for there is another great journey about to begin.

About Halcyon

Setting

Halcyon is set in a vast heroic fantasy world. It is a world that is defined by adventure and rich history. What makes Halcyon special is not a dramatically unique premise or presentation, but rather a light-hearted and accessible spirit that has surprising depth. On the surface, Halcyon looks familiar, but it aims to be greater than the sum of its parts by combining strong characters, entertaining storytelling, and a personality of its own.

Themes

Halcyon is a canvas that allows for many stories to be told with a variety of themes. Many of the core ideas explored in Halcyon lie at the intersection between politics, religion, and humanity. It asks questions about the purpose of life, the significance of death, and what it means to live a meaningful life. Halcyon will be medium to discuss a great deal of topics, but that doesn't mean that every story is going to be one that is serious of nature. Plenty of Halcyon is adventure for the sake of adventure and entertainment.

Goals

The goal of this project was to create a continually growing world with limitless boundaries. It acts as a backdrop for many stories to come that take the form of many mediums. TTRPG campaigns, novels, and short stories are all possibilities. One of the hopes for this project is that it will have support and new ideas brought to it for a long time. The creation of this wiki is also a way for the authors to practice their creative writing, web development, storytelling, digital art skills, cartography, and more.

How This Started

Halcyon is a collection of ideas that I have been developing over the last decade. As a long time fan of fantasy and someone who suffers from being a Chronic Nerd, I've always dreamed of fictional worlds and their stories. I've also been a dungeon master for at least twenty different games and worlds, but none of my campaigns have ever lasted too long. I would start my new world with new ideas every time. Same goes for every attempt at NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Every November I would start a novel with a fresh idea for a world. All of these ideas had good intentions and a few good ideas but none of them reached a level of polish or consistency that I really needed. With my discovery of World Anvil, I realized that I could host and build on all of my ideas with very little friction. So I decided that for my next NaNoWriMo novel and D&D campaign, I would operate out of one vast world with a consistent source of information and ideas.
