Many had noticed that strange tremors had been occurring more frequently in several remote parts of the continent; some adventurers had gone out looking to see the cause of these tremors. However despite several looking into the cause no concrete reason could be determined. It was following the most recent and strongest tremors that had all occurred at the same time across the continent that the first of the “Awakened” started to emerge from the desert, forest, mountains and other unexplored lands all across the continent. These beings range significantly in appearance, some looking like people with strange markings, others like talking aware golems, still more like metallic genasi. Even among those with some similarities they can vary considerably with clockwork like interiors or others suffused with arcane energy. All of them regardless of how they look seem to be confused as to what is going on and have no memories save some brief flashes or glimpses of things they cannot make sense of or fleeting feelings of deja vu like something at the edge of thought they can’t grasp. The Awakened also vary in temperament and fall all over the moral spectrum just like normal people. They have slowly started to make their ways into towns and join into society with some societies being more welcoming than others. Why they started to appear and where they are coming from is still partially a mystery. Some religious believe that one of the gods must have created a new race to inhabit the world but others point to the myriad forms of these Awakened saying that there is no way a god would do this and so far none of the major religions has made the claim. Other scholars believe these beings may be yet more fallout from the breaching the Divine Gate by the Black King and point to increased activity of Watchers of the Void in recent years as proof though the Watchers have been silent on the matter and have not actively moved against any of the Awakened and in many cases have been seen to help lost individuals they have found wandering guiding them to civilization and toward the Starcaller’s temples for help. The wildest claims are by a few fringe researchers and “scholars” notably a several students of the late Dr. Ziqrids, a well known eccentric. They claim these Awakened must be from the ancient Shori civilization however until someone is able to locate one of sources of where these beings are coming from anyone's guess is purely academic.
