Gazeless

Gazeless are those born during a solar eclipse, when the gaze of the moon, Syllu, is blocked. To be born without the gaze of Syllu is considered the world-over to be an omen of ill fate. A person born Gazeless is easy to spot, as their eyes lack pupils, and if they have hair, it is devoid of color. This is not to say their hair is white, but rather clear, like threads of fine glass. A person born Gazeless is often abandoned or worse, and even if an afflicted person survives to adulthood they are at best avoided, and at worst attacked. Gazeless people generally do not exhibit symptoms of sickness, the stigma is generally cultural. However, some people born this way later exhibit great power, though very few learn to control it, and they often perish. The powers themselves vary person to person, as some Gazeless end up self-immolating completely on accident, while others have been noted to fade in and out of the material plane. There is no one way these powers may manifest, if they do so at all.

Causes

The only way to become a Gazeless is by being born during a solar eclipse, which happens only once every 5 or 6 years.

Symptoms

Clear hair, pupilless eyes (curiously, vision is not hindered), rare manifestation of arcane power.

Treatment

There is no known way to cure a Gazeless.

Prognosis

A Gazeless person may live a full life, but often die young due to cultural prejudice.

History

The first recorded Gazeless was a Gnome named Osian Gwydr. Osian was born in Diwe, Demal (modern day Cyfandir) in 625 AR. Though loved by his parents, Osian was ostracized by his community, and as such his family moved to a secluded home outside the city. Osian's childhood was as normal as it could be, living functionally as a hermit, but around the age of 16, he began to exhibit uncontrolled bouts of arcana. His hands would grow claws, fire would shoot from his eyes, and he would would become incorporeal and fall through chairs and floors. At age 18, Osian unwittingly fired ice from his body and killed his father. His mother became cold and distant, and never looked at him again. At age 20 Osian left his family home and wandered into the center of Diwe, where he self-immolated in front of hundreds of terrified onlookers. Since then, Gazeless have been the subject of a great deal of prejudice.

Cultural Reception

Gazeless are feared and ostracized. Life expectancy for a Gazeless is short, as they are often killed young, or commit suicide.
