Earth
Earth is well known to all as the cradle of humanity and is still considered by some as the only true home of mankind, no matter how far the species expand into the verse.
The old nations of Earth still carry weigh, even if the actual power they wield is minimal. Culture and language runs deep in the people of the planet and even close to a century of Federation rule has done little to homogenize the population.
Climate
As a result of years of environmental work and near ecological collapse the climate of Earth has mostly returned to pre-industrial levels. The use of fossil fuels and extraction of minerals that nearly drove mankind to extinction has been drastically reduced as the earth has been mostly drained on easily accessible raw materials. The shift in power production to renewables and fusion power made harvesting oil and gas unprofitable and most of earth's industry is reliant on minerals imported from the asteroid belt as this became cheaper than paying heavy environmental taxes on earth based mining.
Most of earth therefore enjoy a temperate climate with predictable weather patterns and seasons.
However, the scars of the Calamity War is still evident in some regions of Earth, most notably the American mid-west, Chinese north coastline and a area of Europe including the former countries of Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands as well as areas of France, England and Germany. These areas as well as many others were hit by asteroid strikes in the Calamity War, the rocks sent by Mars in the attacks were meant to destroy key military, industrial and financial centers of Earth. The lives lost and ecological impact of these asteroid strikes was before this unheard of, each rock dropped equal to or surpassing the power of even the most advanced nuclear weapons.

History
The vast and diverse geography of the earth has by-and-large changed little in the last few centuries. While the climate catastrophes of the past centuries caused untold loss in life and biological diversity, these threats where eventually, although painstakingly , solved.
Just as the climate was returning to pre-industrial levels and some of the species that had been through extinct were being returned to the earth with the latest cloning technology, the planet suffered through the Calamity War, possibly the worst catastrophe in recorded history.
The planet suffered badly during the 10 year long war, but the worst shock came in the last year of fighting, when Mars dropped a series of asteroids on the planet. Large centers of military power were prime targets for asteroid strikes by Mars during the war, and so large parts of North America, central China and parts of Europe and the middle east were turned into desolate wastelands and ruined cities.
The American government retreated into the Rocky mountains and consolidated their power with the quickly forming Earth defence forces, all while fighting civil unrest throughout North America. Meanwhile the remnants of China remodelled into a Pan-Asian Alliance, partially by diplomacy, partially by force. The Pan-Asian Alliance later became a cornerstone of the Earth side of the Federation and held much sway during the negotiations for the Treaty of Luna. These two superpowers changed the most in the years following the Calamity. The American block fell into a national depression, morning for the loss of two thirds of the population and almost half of its territories reduced to wastelands. This rebuilding of the country led both to increased reliance and trust of other Earth nations and a revival of what historians refer to as "Americana", a romanticizing of the old west, personal heroism and making something new from nothing.
In the Pan-Asian Alliance, Chinese influence faded over the following generations as the Pan-Asian Alliance inadvertently leveled the economic playing field in south-east asia and opened up for more equal trade, growth and education. This lead to a more interconnected asia were regional cultures and language became more important than national belonging. For a time after the Calamity War the Pan-Asian Alliance (now existing as a local government under the rule of Earth-Mars Federation ) prospered and was expected by many to become a shining example of equality and prosperety for the rest of Earth.
