Healing Hovel
The Healing Hovel
In the soot-stained labyrinth of Sigil's Lower Ward, where industrial fumes fight with the acrid stench of planar portals, stands The Healing Hovel. It is an architectural afterthought, a precarious three-story structure leaning against massive, ancient obsidian walls that curve upward into the infinite cityscape of the Spire. While the Clerk’s Ward has immaculate sanitariums, The Hive has nothing; the Healing Hovel is the desperate middle ground, a sanctuary for those whose pockets are light but whose wounds are deep.
The Healing Hovel is a location in Sigil, City of Doors, frequently used for restorative services, often run by NPCs like Balthazar Thames on Thislewind Way. It serves as a specialized, often low-key, place for characters to obtain magical healing, separating religious temples from practical, paid medicinal services.
While temples exist in the City of Doors, places like the Healing Hovel operate as specialized, often accessible, places to recover from battles, particularly in areas like the Hive or lower city regions.
The Architecture
The Hovel is not built; it is assembled. It is a chaotic mosaic of planar detritus, reflecting the transient nature of the City of Doors.
The facade is a patchwork of blackened iron plating from Acheron, petrified wood columns that still bleed red sap, and salvaged hull-plating from a githyanki astral brig. It leans at an impossible angle, held upright only by massive, rusty chains anchoring it to the adjacent structures and perhaps a forgotten stabilizing enchantment.
A massive, hand-hammered copper sign hangs over the narrow street, constantly leaking a small amount of green oxidation. It features a simple icon—a hand holding a glowing spark—and the words "HEALING HOVEL" rendered in bold, uneven letters. A smaller, weathered wooden plaque hangs below, adding the fine print: "CURATIVES & COMFORT. ALL PLANES WELCOME. NO FIENDS PREFERRED." The front door is merely a heavy canvas curtain, layered with dozens of smaller scraps of fabric to keep out the Lower Ward's yellow fog. Lanterns containing low-grade continual flames of purple and blue hang nearby, casting a bruised light on those waiting outside.
The Interior
Stepping inside is stepping into an overwhelming sensory experience. The air is thick, warm, and constantly moving, smelling intensely of boiled pungent herbs, antiseptic ozone, strong spirits, and the damp wool of the downtrodden.
The entire ground floor is one large room, crammed with mismatched cots and hammocks strung from the ceiling. A githzerai monk with a fractured arm might be lying next to a soot-covered dwarf suffering from "Foundry Lung." The noise is a constant low hum of whispered prayers, coughs, and the sharp hiss of potions being uncorked.
The wall behind the main counter is a masterpiece of organized chaos, featuring hundreds of shelves packed with glass jars, clay pots, and leather pouches. Labels are written in a dozen languages, referencing everything from "Abyssal Salt" to "Elysian Honey."
The Hovel is dim. Sunlight doesn't reach this deep in the Ward. The interior is lit by hanging glass bottles filled with bioluminescent moss and a few sputtering gas lamps, casting long, swaying shadows across the busy floor.
