Carnival Grounds
Deep within the Fettered Ward of Gloomwrought, where the city's living walls groan with the weight of iron chains and despair, the Carnival Grounds stand as a garish, flickering anomaly. Run by the enigmatic Mister Witch (alongside his partner, Mister Light), this traveling circus offers a temporary reprieve from the crushing melancholy of the Shadowfell—though the price of admission is often more than just coin.
The Carnival Grounds are a dizzying maze of shadow-spun silk tents and flickering witchlight lanterns. In a city where color goes to die, the carnival’s muted purples, deep crimsons, and sickly greens feel like an assault on the senses. The usual cacophony of the Fettered Ward—the clinking of chains and the moans of the "Ghost Hall"—is replaced by the wheezing music of a calliope that sounds suspiciously like a chorus of sighing spirits.
Key Locations
The Big Top of Midnight
A massive pavilion made of displacer beast hide and shadow-weave. Inside, gravity feels optional. Performers execute death-defying stunts, but in the Shadowfell, "death-defying" is literal. If a trapeze artist falls, the shadows often catch them—or consume them.
The Hall of Thorns
A hall of mirrors where the reflections don't show your face, but rather the person you would have been if you’d never left the Material Plane. It is a place of profound grief and addictive nostalgia for the city's residents.
The Midnight Market
A row of stalls where "Joy-Sellers" hawk bottled emotions. For a few gold pieces, a Gloomwrought noble can buy ten minutes of genuine laughter or the scent of a summer meadow.
