Humans are by and far the most powerful of the races found on Oerth, even though they have the shortest lifespans. Although humans are treated as a single race in the AD&D® game, they come in all the varieties we know on Earth. A human PC can have whatever racial characteristics the DM allows.

Humans have only one special ability: They can be of any character class and rise to any level in any class (if level limits are enforced by the DM). Other PC races have limited choices in these areas.

Humans are also more social and tolerant than most other races, accepting the company of elves, dwarves, and the like with noticeably less complaint.

Because of these abilities and tendencies, humans have become significant powers within the world and often rule empires that other races (because of their racial tendencies) would find difficult to manage.

Although humans are treated as a single race in the game, they come in many varieties. A human PC can have whatever racial characteristics the DM allows. A character is not limited to choosing a specific race. They can also have a mix of traits from any of the human races as the various races have intermingled over the centuries since the Great Migrations. However, some areas or countries have one race that is dominant.

Humans have only one special ability: they can be of any character class. The other PC races are limited in their choices.

Humans of the Flanaess

Nearly all the humans of the Flanaess can trace their roots to five racial groups. (A sixth group, the Olman of the Amedio Jungle, are generally taken as slaves to the Hold of the Sea Princes. The Olman are not playable as characters.).

There are few pure racial groups extant on the Flanaess. save perhaps at the fringe areas of the continent. Of course, the races of demihumans are relatively unmixed, but humankind, as is its wont, has industrially intermixed in the central regions to form a hybrid type which has actually become the norm.

Many folk retain distinctive racial characteristics, but most are difficult to recognize due to the long centuries of mixed marriages. However even in these cases, many families identify with a certain racial group and follow those traditions and customs whether they resemble their ancestors or not. Only the Rhennee shun marriages outside their own race.

Skin color is given little importance by intelligent folk, particularly in the central lands, though some royal courts promote particular racial types. Each race appears to have developed ages ago in isolation from all others, with its own pantheon of deities, language, and culture. In practical matters of exploration, trade, adventure, and war, color and race have little meaning.

The various human races of the Flanaess have identical characteristics and abilities (see above), though each race has its own place of origin, physical appearance, and pantheon of gods allied with it. Humans of different races frequently intermarry, slowly blending peoples and cultures.
