Beltar in Greyhawk | World Anvil

Beltar (BEL-tar)

Mistress of the Pit, The Hateful One, Goddess of Hatred and Jealousy

Malice, pits, deep caves

Lesser Goddess, Chaotic Evil (Chaotic Neutral)
Origin: Suloise
Symbol: Set of opened fangs poised to bite
Domain: Abyss/Tarterian Depths of Carceri
Allies: None
Enemies: Everyone
Worshippers: Suel, evil nonhumans, and savage humans
Beltar is a cruel goddess who delights in squeezing the life from the weak and defenseless. She hates nearly everything, even other deities.   She was formerly a goddess of earth and mines, but was supplanted by other Suel gods as well as nonhuman deities such as Moradin - The All-Father and Garl Glittergold, until her only worshipers were nonhuman slaves (such as Derro, goblins, and kobolds). It is perhaps for this reason that Jascar is one of her greatest enemies.   Worshipped mostly by humanoids, she rules over the hateful things that live under the earth. Although her true form is that of an ugly old hag, she can take the shape of a beholder, a red dragon or even a snake-like marilith (aka Type V demon). It is possible that this last form has given rise to the rumors of a Suel snake-goddess. She takes on mates in any of her forms, but usually eats her young — and her mate as well.

Worshipers

Beltar's followers are encouraged to mine and explore caverns for riches and foes to kill. Her worshippers are mostly savage humans and evil nonhumans, barbaric dwellers in vast subterranean caverns. She pushes her faithful to join together in great armies and ally themselves with beholders, demons, red dragons, liches, and other powerful creatures and must wage war on hated foes. Her followers are relentless explorers and raiders who take whatever they can find in the darkness and make it their own.   Beltar is worshipped in the Bone March, the Pomarj, Stonehold, and even in Erelhei-Cinlu. Some regard her marilith form as evidence that she is the Suloise snake-goddess worshipped in the Vale of the Lamia and the Isle of Serpents. Relationships

Dogma

Mine and explore caves in pursuit of foes and riches. Fear is not acceptable in the face of adversity, and only hatred is allowed for those who stand in your way.

Beltar's Priests

Inspiring hatred in others, Beltar's priests worship in deep caves and on other points of low ground. They require sacrifices from their constituents to appease their foul goddess, usually traitors or the weak-willed in caves or points of low ground. Sometimes these sacrifices will be victims of a kidnapping or captured prisoners. Sometimes they will perform a mass sacrifice to appease Beltar when they have multiple victims on hand. Priests of Beltar have been known to eat their victims after the sacrifice has been completed. Priests of Beltar are often the leaders of humanoid tribes, especially those in league with more powerful monsters (beholders, demons, and dragons are the preferred masters). Those who cannot do so are cast out to find heathen tribes to convert or new enemies for to fight.   Beltar rewards her most devoted priests with undeath; returning (as NPCs, if player characters) within one year as a type of undead appropriate to their hit dice to aid their original tribe and show proof of their goddess’ power.   Clergy: Shamans
