Urnst, County of
The County of Urnst is a fiercely independent land, historically breaking away from both the Great Kingdom and Nyrond with the support of the Duchy of Urnst. Ruled by House Gellor under Countess Belissica, the county maintains a strong alliance with the Duchy while preserving its autonomy, boasting a capable military and a rich cultural heritage centered in Radigast City.
History
Originally under the control of the Kingdom of Nyrond after it broke away from the Great Kingdom, the County of Urnst itself declared independence in 356 CY, alongside Urnst and the Pale, with encouragement from the Duchy of Urnst to the south. For over a century, the county remained under the Duchy’s influence until it achieved full palatinate status in 498 CY. The people of Urnst, largely of Oeridian descent, have long resisted both Aerdi influence and rule by a Nyrondal monarch, fostering a strong sense of regional identity.
Politics and Society
The County of Urnst is governed by House Gellor, with Countess Belissica as its current ruler. Though allied with the Duchy of Urnst, the county remains politically independent. The Duke of Urnst has sought to strengthen ties by proposing marriage between his eldest son and the Countess, though the county’s nobility remains divided on the matter. Despite its alliances, Urnst values its autonomy and maintains a distinct political identity separate from its neighbors.
Religion
The County of Urnst is home to numerous temples dedicated to both Suel and Oeridian deities, reflecting the diverse religious traditions of its inhabitants. Worship is widespread and varies by region, with no single faith dominating the land.
Military
The County maintains a standing army of 2,000 infantry and cavalry, stationed at key garrisons across its territory. In times of need, noble levies can raise an additional 20,000 troops within a fortnight, ensuring a rapid military response. Additionally, the County operates a small but efficient squadron of warships on the Nyr Dyv, safeguarding its waterways and trade routes.
Notable Locales
- Radigast City, the county’s capital, is famed for its breathtaking mosaics, set into the streets at various points. Originally designed by the celebrated artist Joru Thillpot, these artworks depict legendary scenes from mythology and history and are maintained at the city’s expense.
