Ull
Ull is a harsh and warlike land ruled by the fierce Uli, a breakaway tribe of Paynim nomads who settled between the Barrier Peaks and the Ulsprue Mountains. Though many still follow a nomadic lifestyle, trade with the Baklunish states has led to the growth of settlements like Ulakand and Kester, while their unpredictable and brutal culture ensures a volatile political landscape.
History
The lands known today as Ull were originally the homeland of the Oeridian tribes before their great migration eastward during and after the Suel-Baklunish War. Over a thousand years ago, the Uli tribe, once part of the Paynims, split off from their nomadic kin and settled the fertile lands between the Barrier Peaks and the Ulsprue Mountains. Some of these fierce nomads abandoned their wandering ways to establish the caravan town of Ulakand, as well as numerous villages across the region. Over time, Ull became an unforgiving and warlike land, known for its monstrous blood sports, ruthless warriors, and thriving trade along the Baklunish-Dry Steppes route.
Politics and Society
Ull is a semi-nomadic domain, surrounded by mountains and vast grasslands, where rulership is often determined by duels and assassination. Draika Borinok, the current leader, rules with an iron fist, though her position is never secure. The northern half of Ull is dominated by traditional Baklunish nomads, while in the southern half, an increasing number of families have settled in towns and villages, primarily to support the lucrative caravan trade. The town of Kester enjoys some degree of autonomy from its nomadic kin in Ulakand. The original Oeridian tribes, displaced by the Uli, now struggle to survive in the foothills, where they compete with orc and ogre clans.
Despite its brutal reputation, Ull has become a crucial trade nexus between the Baklunish states and the Dry Steppes, drawing even hardy halfling merchants to its settlements.
Religion
The Uli people follow the Baklunish pantheon, worshipping deities revered by their nomadic ancestors. Shrines and altars are scattered throughout Ull, though religion takes a secondary role to survival and martial prowess.
Military
The Uli army consists primarily of fierce cavalry, reflecting their nomadic heritage. However, the towns and villages are well-defended by hardened infantry, wielding massive bows, exotic polearms, and two-handed maces. The vast numbers of warriors allow Ull to maintain a strong force of horsemen while still keeping their settlements secure. Their unpredictable nature makes them a dangerous and unreliable foe—or ally.
