Ulek, County of
The County of Ulek is a prosperous and diverse realm nestled in the western foothills of the Lortmil Mountains, home to a mix of humans, gnomes, halflings, and dwarves. Gaining independence in 453 CY, it maintains strong ties with its neighbors and thrives under the rule of Count Lewenn Richfield, balancing tradition, diplomacy, and military readiness.
History
The western foothills of the Lortmil Mountains have long been a haven for demi-humans, with the name Ulek tracing back many centuries. The region fell under Keoland’s rule during its imperial expansion, but with independence in 453 CY, it established strong ties of friendship and trade with its neighbors. The Count of Ulek supplied many troops for the Hateful Wars (498–510 CY), reaping the benefits of prosperity after the humanoids were expelled from the mountains.
Politics and Society
The County Palatine enjoys positive relations with the other Ulek States, Celene, and Keoland. It is ruled by a cadet branch of a Keoish royal family, granting it a privileged status compared to other provinces. Political affairs are influenced by the druidic hierarchy, though the County is not a theocracy.
The County's rolling hills are dotted with villages and farmsteads, home to gnome brewers, woodworkers, and artisans who contribute significantly to the region’s trade. Governance is light-handed, with rulers offering guidance rather than strict edicts. The people show a stronger Flan influence than the typical Oeridian-Suel mix of Keoland, though they remain distinct from the cultures west of the Javan River. The County also has a significant gnome and halfling population, whose representatives hold notable influence at court.
Religion
Religious tolerance is the norm in the County of Ulek. While humans typically worship Oeridian or Flan deities, demi-humans venerate their ancestral gods.
Military
The County fields a diverse military, composed of mixed human and demi-human regiments.
- Medium infantry units are composed of both humans and demi-humans.
- Medium cavalry and heavy infantry are exclusively human.
- Light infantry and scouts are typically drawn from the gnome and halfling populations.
With the humanoid tribes of the Lortmils expelled, the County has maintained its military strength while enjoying a long period of relative peace.
Notable Locales
The capital, Jurnre, is a thriving city known for its commerce and culture.
The County of Ulek extends between the Kewl and Old Rivers, through the Lortmils, reaching Courwood in the Suss Forest.
