Tusmit, Pashalik of

The Pashalik of Tusmit is a wealthy and strategically vital nation that maintains its independence through cunning diplomacy and balancing the ambitions of its powerful Baklunish neighbors. Ruled by Pasha Qharlan Sylba, Tusmit thrives on trade, skilled craftsmanship, and the careful use of mercenaries to defend its borders and interests.

History

Tusmit was one of the original lands founded on the ruins of the Baklunish Empire. Until approximately a century ago, it was under the control of Ekbir, but the then-Pasha, Omar Nuunn, took advantage of the struggle for control of the Caliphate and declared his lands independent. Since then, an uneasy truce has existed between the two, often disrupted by outbreaks of open war.

Politics and Society

Tusmit occupies a precarious political position, skillfully playing one powerful neighbor against another to ensure its survival. By leveraging diplomatic maneuvers, the Pasha retains control over the rich lands south of the Tuflik River without plunging the nation into full-scale war. Small border clashes with Ekbir, Ket, and the Paynims are common, but open conflict remains avoided where possible. Above all, the Pasha fears annexation by Ekbir, and much of Tusmit’s foreign policy reflects this concern.

To counteract foreign threats, the Pasha is known to hire mercenaries from Perrenland, Ull, and other regions, reinforcing Tusmit’s forces without committing too many of its own troops. The state is also notorious for its underworld dealings, with thieves and assassins operating openly in its cities, drawn by the wealth and intrigue of the land.

Religion

As a deeply Baklunish nation, Tusmit exclusively venerates Baklunish deities. The region is a frequent stop for the great pilgrim caravans that travel through the Baklunish lands, connecting Tusmit to the larger religious traditions of the western realms.

Military

Tusmit’s military forces are primarily light and medium cavalry, numbering around 4,000, supported by 1,000 heavy foot soldiers. These forces are engaged in frequent skirmishes along the borders with Ekbir and Ket, as well as repelling raids from the tumans (hordes) of Paynim horsemen. The army is further bolstered by mercenary companies, including warriors from Perrenland, Ull, and even dwarven fighters from the Yatil and Crystalmist Mountains.

While Tusmit’s native soldiers are highly skilled, it is the Pasha’s reliance on mercenaries that ensures the nation's continued security and independence. The fear of absorption by Ekbir remains ever-present, shaping both Tusmit’s military and political strategies.
