The Suloise People

Suloise, often referred to as the Suel, are one of the major human races of the Flanaess. Their origins trace back to the Suel Imperium, a once-great civilization that was destroyed in the cataclysmic Rain of Colorless Fire. The survivors scattered across the continent, establishing new homes and influencing the cultures of many lands.

Physical Characteristics

  • Complexion: The Suel are the fairest-skinned of the Flanaess' human groups, with a high incidence of albinism. In sun-drenched regions, some develop heavy freckling or a more tanned appearance.
  • Hair: Typically blond, light red, or platinum blonde. It is often curly, wiry, or kinky in texture.
  • Eyes: Common colors include pale blue, violet, and deep blue, with gray occurring occasionally.
  • Build: The Suel tend to have lean, narrow faces and slender yet resilient physiques.

History & Migration

The Suel first arrived in the Flanaess around -447 CY, fleeing the conflicts of the Suel Imperium. Their migration intensified after -422 CY, following the twin disasters of the Invoked Devastation and the Rain of Colorless Fire, which annihilated their homeland.

Many Suel groups established settlements along the southern coasts and islands of the Flanaess. However, they often came into conflict with the native Flan , the invading Oeridians, and non-human races such as elves and dwarves. Some Suel communities were absorbed into Oeridian-dominated societies, while others maintained distinct cultural identities.

The purest Suel bloodlines can be found in:

  • The Duchy of Urnst
  • The Thillonrian Peninsula, home to the Frost , Ice , and Snow Barbarians (the Snow Barbarians being nearly albino)
  • The Scarlet Order, on the Tilvanot Peninsula
  • The Lordship of the Isles, the Sea Barons, and the Urnst States

Suel who migrated to the Amedio Jungle and Hepmonaland have developed a tanned or brown-skinned complexion with heavy freckling, adapted to the tropical climate.

Culture & Traits

The Suel have a reputation for being:

  • Blunt, proud, and opinionated
  • Highly individualistic and ambitious
  • Passionate about study and knowledge, especially in the arcane arts
  • Occasionally callous, even cruel, often refusing to admit flaws or hardships

The Suel Imperium was renowned for its mastery of magic, and many Suel wizards today continue this tradition. Sorcery and wizardry are deeply ingrained in their culture, and it is not uncommon for Suel mages to achieve great power. However, some Suel spellcasters are drawn to darker arts, a remnant of the Imperium’s notorious obsession with magic at any cost.

Fashion & Dress

  • Clothing: Loose-fitting pantaloons and blouses (in the north) or vests (in the south)
  • Colors: Prefer solid colors; commoners wear one color, while nobles and the wealthy wear multiple hues
  • Adornment: Suel frequently wear large pins, brooches, emblems, and tokens, often signifying lineage or status

Language

  • Ancient Suloise: The original tongue of the Suel, now a rare and archaic language, mostly preserved in ancient texts
  • Fruz (Cold Tongue): A modern descendant spoken by the Frost, Ice, and Snow Barbarians

The Suloise Pantheon

The Suel gods are said to have been brought into existence by Lendor, the chief deity of time and order. As Lendor shaped the world, his divine children emerged:

  • Phaulkon – Sky and birds
  • Osprem – Seas and navigation
  • Fortubo – Mountains and mines
  • Llerg – Beasts and savagery
  • Bralm – Insects and industry
  • Phyton – Nature and beauty
  • Wee Jas – Magic, law, and death
  • Beltar – The dark depths of the world

At first, Lendor sought order and perfection in the Suloise people. However, darkness crept into his creation. Some of his children became tainted by deceit and wickedness:

  • Norebo – Trickery and chance
  • Syrul – Lies and deception
  • Pyremius – Murder and fire

Horrified by these imperfections, Lendor blinded himself with his flaming sword, preventing him from bringing any further deities into existence. One final god, Kord, was not of Lendor’s making—born instead of Syrul’s deceitful union with Phaulkon.

Legacy

Though the Suel Imperium fell, the Suel people have left an indelible mark on the Flanaess. Their arcane traditions, cultural pride, and complex lineage remain central to their identity. Whether found in the halls of magic, on the icy shores of the north, or within the shadowy ranks of the Scarlet Brotherhood, the Suel continue to shape the world in both light and darkness.
