Tenh, Duchy of
The Duchy of Tenh is a proud Flan nation that has maintained its independence despite centuries of conflict with surrounding powers, including the Bandit Kingdoms, the Theocracy of the Pale, and the raiders of Stonefist. Renowned for its elite Tenha Host cavalry and deeply rooted in Flan traditions, Tenh is ruled by Duchess Ehliyah Raynar III, who upholds its legacy of resilience and defiance.
History
During the great migrations of the Oeridians and Suel, the Flan tribes found sanctuary in the fertile uplands between the Artonsamay River and the Griff Mountains. The Flan of Tenh have never been conquered, maintaining an unbroken tradition of fierce independence. When the Great Kingdom of Aerdy began its expansion, the strongest noble among the Flan was granted the title of Duke, and the state of Tenh was formally invested.
For centuries, Tenh was subject to periodic raids from the Hold of Stonefist, which typically followed a familiar pattern: the raiders would enjoy early successes but succumb to internal strife as they looted, giving Tenh’s forces time to retaliate. In 575 CY, the Duchess initiated a concerted campaign to purge the Troll Fens and the western lands beyond the Yoll River of humanoid threats, fortifying Tenh’s eastern border. Though the effort continues, it has been largely successful.
Politics and Society
The ruler of Tenh, Duchess Ehliyah Raynar III, holds absolute power, though a Council of Lords serves as advisors. Tenh remains in a precarious position, facing threats from all directions. The Bandit Kingdoms menace the western borders along the Artonsamay and Zumker Rivers, while the Pale constantly seeks to expand its influence and convert Tenha citizens to the One True Path. To the north, the savage Rovers of the Barrens launch ruthless raids. Fortunately, the Urnst States and the Kingdom of Nyrond stand as allies to the south.
Tenha society values its Flan heritage, taking great pride in its unique traditions. Magic and nature hold deep significance for the people, with the Keepers of the Flan—a revered order of mages, druids, and loremasters—serving as protectors of their ancient knowledge. The archmage Nystul maintains a residence in Redspan, offering his arcane expertise in service of his homeland.
Despite constant threats, the Tenha are proud and resolute. Their indomitable spirit is reflected in their hardened warriors and legendary cavalry, the Tenha Host, which ranks among the finest in the Flanaess. The lorekeepers of Tenh still recount the resounding victory over the Aerdy a century and a half ago that secured their nation’s independence.
Religion
As the Tenha are predominantly of Flan descent, so too do Flan deities predominate in their worship. Their religious traditions emphasize harmony with nature, resilience, and reverence for their ancestors.
Military
Tenh boasts highly skilled medium cavalry and a formidable infantry specializing in shortbows and polearms. Known collectively as the Tenha Host, these troops have earned an excellent reputation on the battlefield.
The Thunder Pass, a key route into the Hold of Stonefist, is heavily patrolled, and raids from the north are either repelled or delayed until reinforcements from the walled city of Calbut can arrive. However, in recent years, the relative peace has led to some complacency, and Calbut’s garrison has been depleted, with troops diverted to assist in the Troll Fens campaign.
