Temple of Elemental Evil
The Temple of Elemental Evil is a notorious bastion of darkness and corruption located in the central Flanaess, near the city-state of Verbobonc and the village of Nulb.
Originally built in 566 CY by forces of evil from Dyvers and the Wild Coast, the temple began as a small chapel but quickly grew into a formidable stone stronghold. From this wicked place, bands of brigands and evil humanoids spread terror across the region.
The Battle of Emridy Meadows (569 CY)
By 569 CY, the growing threat of the temple could no longer be ignored. A combined force of men-at-arms from Furyondy and Veluna, alongside dwarves from the Lortmil Mountains, gnomes from the Kron Hills, and elven archers from the Gnarley Forest, marched against the temple's forces. Their opposition was a horde of orcs, ogres, gnolls, and human cultists who had rallied under the banner of Elemental Evil.
The two armies clashed at Emridy Meadows, where the forces of good ultimately triumphed. The timely arrival of elven reinforcements sealed the fate of the Horde of Elemental Evil, which was driven against the banks of the Velverdyva River and slaughtered. During the battle, Serten, a cleric of Saint Cuthbert and member of the Citadel of Eight, was slain. The absence of the Citadel of Eight from the battle contributed to their decline and eventual dissolution.
The Fall of the Temple
With the Horde of Elemental Evil broken, the allied forces laid siege to the Temple of Elemental Evil itself. Within two weeks, they stormed the stronghold and shattered its defenses. In a final act, the most powerful spellcasters of the alliance worked together to seal the demoness Zuggtmoy, a key instigator of the temple's rise, within its deepest dungeons.
Although the temple had fallen, the site remained a lingering wound upon the land. Over the next decade, rumors of dark forces stirring within the ruins continued to spread. The Viscount of Verbobonc and the Archcleric of Veluna, fearing a resurgence of evil, constructed a small keep near the Village of Hommlet to guard against the temple's revival.
Legacy
The Temple of Elemental Evil remains a place of dread, where malevolent forces seek to rebuild its former power. Dark cultists and creatures still lurk in its ruins, waiting for the day when their dark masters rise again. Despite efforts to contain it, the temple's shadow looms over the region, a constant threat to the people of Verbobonc and beyond.
