Sterich, March of

Sterich is a semi-autonomous border march of Keoland, known for its wealth, strong ties to the dwarves of the Crystalmists, and its ongoing struggle against raids from giants and humanoids. Ruled by Marchioness Quercha Emondav, its people remain fiercely loyal to the Lion Throne while maintaining a strong martial tradition to defend their western frontier.

History

Sterich was the first land beyond the Javan River annexed by Keoland, originally established to provide easier access to the mines of the Crystalmists. Though it enjoys semi-autonomy, it remains loyal to the Lion Throne, and its rulers have long been distant relatives of both the King of Keoland and the Grand Duke of Geoff.

The mountain dwarves of the Crystalmists have been longstanding allies of Sterich, fostering a rich mining industry that has allowed the local nobility to prosper. Despite its wealth, Sterich is often considered a peaceful backwater, rarely involved in the intrigues of the Keoish court. However, the land has always faced a constant threat from humanoid and giant raids, as monstrous warbands descend from the mountains or follow the Davish River in search of plunder.

Politics and Society

Sterich is ruled by Marquise Quercha Emondav, who governs the land with a steady hand while maintaining strong ties to the crown of Keoland. Though technically a vassal of the Keoish king, Quercha is treated more as a favored relative than a mere subject. The people of Sterich are equally devoted to their ruler and the Lion Throne, and they willingly send troops to Keoland in times of need.

The people of Sterich display strong Flan cultural influences, blending with the Oeridian-Suel traditions of Keoland. Their close relationship with the dwarves and gnomes of the mountains has further shaped their customs and economy, making Sterich a land of hardy, independent folk who value both tradition and practicality.

Trade is steady with both the Grand Duchy of Geoff and the Yeomanry, particularly along the Javan River. The march’s prosperity is built upon its mines, agriculture, and skilled artisans, though much of its wealth is reinvested into maintaining strong defenses against external threats.

Religion

While Oeridian deities are the most commonly venerated in Sterich, the region remains religiously tolerant, and various faiths—including those of dwarves and Flan traditions—are practiced openly.

Military

Sterich is known for its renowned light cavalry and skilled sword-armed light infantry, both of which are highly mobile and effective in skirmishes. In times of war, these forces march alongside the armies of Keoland, supplemented by dwarven heavy infantry from the Crystalmists.

However, much of Sterich’s military strength remains deployed on the western frontier, where halberdiers and medium cavalry stand ready to repel raiding humanoids, giants, and other monstrous threats from the mountains.

Notable Locales

  • The Davish River – A major trade route but also a frequent pathway for giant and humanoid raiders descending from the mountains.
  • The Crystalmist Mines – Rich in metals and gems, these mines are worked by dwarves, gnomes, and humans, making Sterich an economic asset to Keoland.
  • The Grand Duchy of Geoff – Sterich's closest ally, sharing both cultural ties and military concerns along their mutual border.
  • The First Chapter of Queen of the Spiders – The legendary GDQ1-7 adventure begins in Sterich, where the growing threat of the giant hordes is first realized.

Sterich stands as a shield against the chaos of the west, its people ever watchful, their swords ever ready, and their loyalty to Keoland unwavering.
