Mountains of the Flanaess

These entries represent but a glimpse into the mountains of the Flanaess, their depths hiding legend, danger, and treasure beyond measure. Adventurers who dare tread these lands will find both glory and death waiting in equal measure.

BARRIER PEAKS

The Barrier Peaks are home to scattered dwur (dwarven) communities, who mine the range’s abundant precious gems and metals. However, the region is infamous for its fierce and bizarre monsters, many of which are unknown elsewhere in the Flanaess.

Buried deep beneath these mountains lies a wrecked spaceship, a remnant of an ancient catastrophe. Additionally, the range holds a sacred site dedicated to Celestian, the god of stars and wanderers, where his devoted followers make rare and perilous pilgrimages.

CLATSPUR RANGE

This small mountain chain is home to Perrenland’s human settlers, who reside in the lower valleys. While the range contains some valuable mineral deposits, it lacks significant demi-human populations.

CORUSK MOUNTAINS

Although poor in precious gems and metals, the Corusk Mountains are fiercely contested by Suel barbarian tribes—the Fruztii, Cruskii, and Schnai—who dominate its lower slopes. Further into the range, bands of humanoids and monstrous creatures stalk the treacherous heights, making these peaks a dangerous and untamed frontier.

CRYSTALMIST MOUNTAINS

The Crystalmists are the tallest mountains in the Flanaess, their jagged peaks towering over the land. Within their depths lurk humanoids, giants, and other fearsome creatures, though mountain dwur also thrive here, drawn by the range’s rich deposits of gems and precious metals.

A vast glacier caps the center of the range, its melting runoff giving rise to the Davish River. Legends whisper that the last Mage of Power of the Suloise, Slerotin, carved a hidden passage through these mountains, allowing the fleeing Suel tribes to escape into the Flanaess. Unknown to most, one such tribe—the Lerara—became trapped within when the tunnel was magically sealed over a thousand years ago. Now, with the ancient wards broken, these albino, inbred remnants of the Suel survive in the darkness, subsisting on phosphorescent fungi and using giant millipedes as beasts of burden. Their isolation has warped them, and they now worship the Mother, a vast, eldritch protoplasmic horror.

The range is also the site of Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl, where the icy domain of the frost giants awaits.

GLORIOLES

This small but significant mountain range is home to as many as 10,000 mountain dwur, who remain distrustful of elves yet have forged a strong alliance with the Iron League against the forces of the South Province.

GRIFF MOUNTAINS

Named for the majestic griffons and hippogriffs that soar above its peaks, the Griff Mountains are teeming with monsters and hidden wonders. While a few human settlements cling to the slopes, most are drawn to the legend of a secret valley deep within—a land of untold riches ruled by a mysterious prince, protected by powerful magic, where the streets are paved with gems and rooftops gleam with copper and silver.

Beneath the range, in the western portion, lies the enormous subterranean orc city of Garel Enkdal, a dangerous and secretive stronghold, featured in Five Shall Be One.

HELLFURNACES

A volcanic extension of the Crystalmists, the Hellfurnaces are a realm of fire and ash, where monsters, humanoids, and giants thrive in the sulfur-choked air. The fire giants, in particular, rule vast strongholds amid the molten depths, reveling in the infernal heat.

Beneath these peaks lies a vast underworld of tunnels, galleries, and hidden cities, an expansive labyrinth connecting to the Underdark. Several legendary adventure modules take place within or below the Hellfurnaces, including:

  • Hall of the Fire Giant King, detailing the stronghold of the fire giants.
  • Descent into the Depths of the Earth, Shrine of the Kuo-Toa, and Vault of the Drow, which explore the treacherous paths leading to the drow city of Erelhei-Cinlu.

JOTUNS

This towering range is infamous for its abundant giant populations—hill, stone, mountain, and even cloud giants—who frequently raid the lowlands. Steading of the Hill Giant Chief unfolds within this perilous land.

LORTMIL MOUNTAINS

Perhaps the richest mountains in the Flanaess, the Lortmils boast unparalleled deposits of gems and precious metals. Once infested with humanoids, the range was purged during the Hateful Wars (498-510 CY), allowing dwur, olve (elves), and noniz (gnomes) to reclaim its riches.

The Ulek states and Celene now control the range, but darkness lingers beneath the peaks. Near the Kron Hills, the water-filled volcanic cone of Mount Raster is a source of mineable diamonds, though its depths have been claimed by the cultists of Tharizdun. Their blasphemous Temple of All-Consumption conceals horrors beyond mortal comprehension.

SULHAUT MOUNTAINS

These arid peaks stand as a formidable barrier between the Dry Steppes and the Sea of Dust. While a known pass exists through the range, few dare to traverse it, for the Sulhauts are prone to fierce electrical storms, charged by the sands of the Sea of Dust.

ULLSPRUE

This rugged range derives its name from the Uli tribes, who dwell in the basin between the Ullsprue and the Barrier Peaks to the east.

YATIL MOUNTAINS

Though rich in gems and precious metals, the Yatils are perilous to mine, for monsters, humanoid tribes, and mountain dwellers claim its heights. The Perrenlanders and Highfolk reside in the eastern valleys, while deep within the peaks stands the Glittering Cathedral of Ulaa, a shrine of breathtaking beauty overlooking the pass between Molvar in Ket and Krestible in Perrenland.

The Yatils also hide great and terrible secrets. Once, they served as the seat of power for the dread witch-queen Iggwilv, whose hidden fortress still haunts the mountains. Among its remnants is the infamous cavern complex of Tsojcanth.

Nearby, within the remote southeastern Yatils, stands a ruined temple to Tharizdun, a forgotten god of unthinkable evil. This blasphemous site, where dark whispers still echo through the crumbling halls.
