Though not a true palace, the grand residence of the Lord Mayor is one of the finest homes in Greyhawk, befitting the city’s highest office without indulging in the extravagance that has doomed other landmarks, such as the Royal Opera House , to premature decay.
The mansion’s exterior is a tasteful blend of dark wooden planking and colorful fieldstone, lending it a stately yet unpretentious appearance. A broad marble porch welcomes visitors, and the opulence within is restrained but undeniable. Hallway floors gleam with polished marble, while the grand ballroom’s black-and-white checkerboard pattern adds a touch of sophistication. A small yet elegant recital studio, with seating for 35, provides an intimate venue for music and performances, featuring a stage large enough for a half-dozen musicians.
The Lord Mayor’s tower, rising at the rear of the estate, serves as the nerve center of the Free City’s governance. The ground floor functions as a reception and conference hall, while the second floor houses Nerof’s workroom, complete with drawing tables, a grand desk, and a personal library dedicated to Greyhawk’s storied past. The third floor, a private study warmed by a large fireplace, is where the city’s most clandestine matters are discussed.
Beyond the mansion, a private stable houses two official coaches and a stable of twenty magnificent horses, while an expansive formal garden adds a rare touch of serenity to the estate. A shrewd and charismatic politician, Nerof Gasgol rules Greyhawk with cunning and manipulation. Born in the Slum Quarter, he seeks legitimacy and aristocratic acceptance, but the nobility still scorns him.
As mayor, he has strengthened the economy and kept the common folk loyal, but secretly aids Furyondy’s navy, risking war. Once a master thief, his career ended after developing crippling vertigo. Though he plays the part of a statesman, his true allies remain thieves and guildmasters.
Those who oppose him face ruin or death—he accepts bribes from both sides but rules on merit, ensuring no one dares challenge him openly.
