Brandobaris
Brandobaris (bran-doe-bair-iss) is the Halfling Deity of Stealth, Thievery, Rogues, and Adventuring. A master of mischief and a patron of thrill-seekers, his sacred animal is the mouse, and his symbol is a halfling's footprint—a fitting mark for one who leaves so few.
Relationships
Brandobaris, ever the wanderer, maintains a cordial relationship with many deities who appreciate his wit and daring. With Fharlanghn, he co-sponsored the apotheosis of Charmalaine, another deity of daring adventure. His exploits have earned him the respect and camaraderie of Garl Glittergold, Baervan Wildwanderer, Dugmaren Brightmantle, Erevan Ilesere, and Vergadain. However, his reckless escapades have also won him the ire of Urdlen, and he shares no love for the avaricious Abbathor.
Realm
Brandobaris is a wandering deity with no fixed divine home. While he is welcome in the Green Fields, where most of the Halfling pantheon resides, he plays little part in its upkeep. His heart lies in the open road, in the thrill of adventure, and in the pursuit of the next great tale.
Dogma
Followers of Brandobaris are expected to seek out danger and excitement, embracing the unpredictability of life. Like their patron, they are free-spirited thrill-seekers who value experience over wealth—adventure itself is the greatest treasure. The faithful honor stories of daring deeds, for in the telling, they capture the essence of their god.
Worshipers & Clergy
The Church of Misadventure is as unstructured as the deity it serves. Brandobaris’s clerics, known as the Hands of Misadventure, are as unconventional as their god. They dress in gray leather armor and feathered caps, marking them as those who embrace the thrill of the unknown.
Each cleric chooses a time—either night or day—for their prayers, reflecting their personal approach to risk. Those who favor boldness and bravado pray by daylight, while those who prefer the cloak of shadows do so by night. Their favored weapons are the short sword and dagger, tools that suit their trade.
Holy Days & Rituals
Brandobaris's holy days fall on the new moon, a time of secrecy and hidden paths. His followers partake in Brandobaris’s Tithe, a monthly rite where stolen items are hidden in the most secure places possible—an offering to their ever-elusive deity.
Temples
There are no temples dedicated to Brandobaris. Instead, every fireside tale of his escapades serves as a sacred tribute. The recounting of his legendary deeds is a form of worship, for where stories of Brandobaris are told, his spirit thrives.
Myths & Legends
Tales of Brandobaris, the Master of Stealth, are as numerous as the stars. In one famous legend, he outmatched Vaprak, the ogre and troll deity, in a contest of speed and cunning, leading the ogres to relinquish their forested homeland to the Halflings.
Brandobaris embodies the archetypal trickster, a charming rogue who fools the powerful, steals from under their noses, and escapes unscathed. His incredible skill allows him to move without a sound and to hide so well that even gods cannot perceive him. His legendary dagger, enchanted to point toward the quickest escape route, ensures he never remains trapped for long, making him immune to maze spells.
His sling, another infamous artifact, hurls balls of dust that place their victims into a deep, magical sleep—allowing him to escape even the direst situations with a sly grin.
Followers & Divine Favor
Brandobaris’s followers are thieves, ranger/thieves, and fighter/thieves, those who embrace daring risks and grand heists. The most devoted take the greatest gambles, knowing that an especially bold and perilous feat may earn them their god’s fleeting favor.
For Halfling thieves of 11th level or higher, there is even a 1% chance per level that Brandobaris may appear in disguise, inviting them on an epic heist. Non-believers who join in these escapades may find themselves mysteriously lighter in coin afterward. Only once the adventure concludes does Brandobaris reveal his true identity—but only to those who follow his path.
His exploits remain legendary, and for those who are fast, clever, and silent, the promise of adventure and reward is always just a step away.
