Phaecians
Basic Information
Anatomy
Externally, they are indistinguishable from exceptionally beautiful and healthy humans. Internally, however, they possess a biological synchronization with water. Their inner ears are evolved to maintain perfect balance even in the most violent gales, and their skin possesses a thin, natural oil that makes them virtually impervious to the salt-corrosion and sun-scald that plagues common sailors.
Biological Traits
- Sentient Ship Bonding: The Phaeacians do not use rudders or oars. Their ships are Living Organisms that move by thought.
- Mortal-Cloaking: They have the ability to weave "Sea-Mists" around their island, making it invisible to any ship they do not wish to be found by.
- Supernatural Agility: On a ship's deck, they move with a speed that defies human reflexes.
Genetics and Reproduction
They are a closed genetic pool. They rarely intermarry with outsiders, as doing so is believed to dilute the "Nautical Spark" that allows them to pilot their sentient ships. Their children are born with a natural affinity for knots, currents, and stars.
Growth Rate & Stages
- The Shore-Bound: Children are kept inland until they learn the "Song of the Sea."
- The Tide-Walker: Adolescents who begin training on smaller, non-sentient skiffs.
- The Helmsman: Reached when a Phaeacian "bonds" with a living ship, a union that lasts for life.
Ecology and Habitats
Their capital is a marvel of "Techno-Magical" Engineering. It features bronze walls, silver and gold guard-dogs (forged by Hephaestus), and "Ever-Blooming Orchards" that produce fruit regardless of the season. They live in a Mediterranean paradise where the climate is perpetually temperate.
Dietary Needs and Habits
They consume a diet of high-energy "Ambrosial Grains" and seafood. They are famous for their Feasts of Silence, where they eat in perfect communal harmony, often communicating through subtle gestures and shared intent rather than speech.
Biological Cycle
They are highly rhythmic. Their lives are governed by the Lunar Tides. They are most active during the night, as they find the stars more reliable for deep-ocean navigation than the sun.
Behaviour
Altruistic but Isolationist. They are the "Universal Ferrymen." If they find a shipwrecked hero (like Odysseus), they will clothe him, feast him, and return him to his home. However, once the task is done, they retreat back to their hidden island, desiring no part in the politics of men.
Additional Information
Social Structure
A Constitutional Monarchy. The King (Alcinous) and Queen (Arete) rule, but they are advised by a council of twelve peers. Queen Arete is notably influential, often settling disputes that the King cannot.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Their Sentient Ships are the most sought-after vessels in existence. They possess no rudders, no oars, and can never be lost or wrecked. They move "as fast as a thought or a wing."
Facial characteristics
Their eyes are often the color of the sea—shifting between deep blue, green, and grey—and are said to contain a "shimmer" of the divine.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Native to Scheria in the Ionian Sea. They do not establish colonies; they are content with their single, perfect island.
Average Intelligence
Genius-Level (Navigational). While they are skilled in weaving and sports, their cognitive power is almost entirely dedicated to geometry, astronomy, and hydrodynamics.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The Phaeacians possess a Telepathic Maritime Link. They do not "look" at the sea; they feel it. They can perceive underwater terrain and distant weather patterns through the soles of their feet while standing on a deck. Most significantly, they can "speak" to their vessels, sharing a consciousness with their ships.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
They are protected by Automata—living statues of gold and silver shaped like dogs, created by Hephaestus to guard their palace.
Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
A culture of Excellence (Arete). They value music, the bath, the bed, and the dance. They believe that a life without beauty is a life wasted.
History
Their history is defined by their hospitality to Odysseus. After they safely returned him to Ithaca, Poseidon—angry that they helped his enemy—prophesied that he would "heap a mountain" over their port and turn their returning ship to stone.
Athletic and "Long-Limbed." They favor the build of swimmers—broad shoulders and narrow hips.
